Born at Booth Cote, Marple, Cheshire, England. He came to this country a few weeks before his first birthday in 1851. His mother, Hannah Jones Clayton died on the voyage. He grew up in Mineral Point and Linden. In the mid 1880's he went to South Dakota to homestead. He married a homesteaders daughter, Olive Fanny Davids on April 20, 1884 in Brule County, South Dakota. They left South Dakota and went to Keokuk County, Iowa. Around 1904 they made their way back to Mineral Point, Wisconsin.
