GENERAL NOTES: Known as LIBBY. Daughter of John Cocking and Mary James.

BIRTH: There is little or no information in Cornwall found under the name Elizabeth James Cocking, but there is some information available under the name Elizabeth Jane Cocking. The GRO record of the birth is inconclusive in this respect. There is a record of the birth of a JAMES COCKING in the GRO indexes for the Truro Registration District in the September quarter of 1848 under reference 9.274, which I think relates to her. However, this is inconsistent with her birth date given on her grave headstone (7 December 1847), which is not supported by the GRO indexes. Those who buried her obviously went on the very little evidence they had.

The following baptism extract shows:

BAPTISM: Date: 26-Oct 1848
Parish Or Reg District: Chacewater
Name: Elizabeth Jane COCKING (sic)
Sex:
Father Forename: John
Mother Forename: Mary
Residence: Penstrase Moors
Father Rank Profession: Miner
Notes: Bapt. by G L Church ((name of the incumbent minister).

She was a witness at her brother (Thomas)'s wedding in 1862 under the name Elizabeth James Cocking.

MIGRATION: Emigrated to New Jersey, USA, in 1871 to visit her brothers, who had emigrated in June 1869. She arrived unannounced, because she missed her two brothers, her father having bought her ticket for the journey. She stayed, working first as a Saleslady in a Store. The Argall family were living close by, and had been friends of the Cocking family in Cornwall. She and Matt grew closer, and they eventually eloped to Dover, NJ. where they married. She travelled to Austin, Nevada with her husband and his family arriving in 1873. Arrival was reported in the Austin Newspaper dated 11 Aug 1873.

MARRIAGE: It is unsure whether she married in 1871 or 1872.
