MIGRATION: Emanuel moved to the United States and worked as a copper miner in Keweenaw County, Michigan, which is located at the northern tip of that state. Emanuel Broad, age 21, listed as a miner, arrived in the Port of New York on August 3rd, 1858 on the ship Lady Franklin. The master of the ship was Joseph Jordan.

MARRIAGE: He married Alice Nicholls.

Family stories state that Emanuel Broad had a fiance in England, and that he was saving money to bring her to Michigan. One day, as he was going on Cliff Road, he came across the Nichols/Nicholls family whose wagon had broken down. He stopped to help them and met Alice. The rest (as they say) is history. The Nicholls family was also from southern England, but from the Cornwall area. Emanuel and Alice were married on April 4, 1861.

Emanuel worked at Cliff Mine. The couple had only been married 6-7 years when a large rock fell down and hit Emanuel on the back, injuring him. He was paralized for some time, but eventually was able to walk with difficulty, using a cane. Alice died in 1896 and Emanuel followed her three years later. Both are buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Eagle River, Michigan.

Children of the couple are:

Mary Ann born Feb. 22, 1861, at Clifton, Keweenaw, Michigan who married Edmond Bruneau on Feb. 23, 1891. Death was in Phoenix, Keweenaw, Michigan on Dec. 16, 1913.

Emanual Jr. was born in 1863 also at Clifton. He married Helena "Lena" E. Wise on Oct. 20, 1884 at Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin. Emanual died unexpectedly in an accident on May 29, 1899 in Seattle, King, Washington.

Sara/Sarah Adaline/Adeline came next, born June 18, 1865 at Phoenix, Keweenaw, Michigan. Her first husband was Henry Becker/Buker who she married Oct. 28, 1882, at Clifton. Her second husband was Joseph Athance Croteau, who she married Feb. 3, 1890 at Eagle River, Keweenaw, Michigan. Her death came in 1905.

Griselda Mabel was born June 23, 1867 at Phoenix, Michigan. She married John McCauley on Jan. 28, 1882 at Clifton. She died Oct. 14, 1940 in Devils Lake, ND.

Lastly came William "Willie", born in 1870/71. Willie did not marry. He died on Mar. 5, 1917 at Laurium, Houghton, Michigan. William's death record lists his cause of death as acute nephrites, his occupation is recorded as a mill man.

Emanuel also had a sister, Jane Broad Williams, who is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, San Jose California. Two of his brothers also emigrated to the United States, Josiah (b. Aug. 30, 1843, d. Jan. 12, 1929 Negaunee, Michigan), and Anthony (b. Jun. 18, 1846, d. Mar. 13, 1892, also in Negaunee), are buried at Negaunee Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Published in: NEGAUNEE IRON HERALD on Friday, January 18 1929.
CAPT. JOSIAH DEAD. SPENT MANY YEARS IN SERVICE OF LOCAL MINES AN INTERESTING AND HONORABLE CARREER COMES TO A CLOSE AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY-FIVE. SPENT MANY YEARS IN THE SERVICE OF LOCAL MINE.

So tall and straight was he, despite his more than four score years that it was difficult to believe that the active period of his life was spent entirely in civilian, and not military. Pursuits; but no more will be seen of this unbent form of Capt. Josiah Broad, whose stride and trend left no doubt as to firmness of will, and was for so many years a familiar figure in the community for last Saturday this pioneer citizen and veteran mining man passed on. He had been spared a particularly lengthy illness and this end came peacefully. NATIVE OF ENGLAND He was a native of Devonshire, England, having been born at Newton (sic) Abbot on August 30, 1843. Himself a "Seventh son" he has perpetuated the tradition, not only as the male line, but also to the other sex, for there had been seven sons and seven daughters in his family. Mr. Broad came to America at the age of eighteen and located in the Copper Country, engaging in mining work. He was married at Clifton in Keweenaw county, on January 27, 1866 to Miss. Ellen Bennallack who like himself was a native of Devonshire. Toward the close of the 60's the Broad family removed to Negaunee, and from that date to the time of his virtual retirement some fifteen years ago, he has been actively identified with the iron mining industry. He served in various capacities at the old Jackson Mine; at one period had charge of timber work at the Lake Angeline Mine, Ishpeming; spent a year or two with mines on the Cascade Range; and before entering; the service of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company had been connected with U. S. Grant, the Blue, and other First Range property. And after years Capt. Broad limited his charge of the mining being done at the South Jackson, which was operated only during the shipping season.
THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING Capt. And Mrs. Broad found such pleasure in the observance of their Golden Wedding Anniversary on January 27, 1916 but Mrs. Broad's health was already beginning to fade, and she passed away September 12, 1918. Three of the fourteen children who were born to the couple have also died-Josiah Jr.; John Broad and Mrs. Frank Bertal. The survivoring children are; Mrs. Elizabeth Rowe, Ishpeming; Mrs. Anson Alguier, Superior, Wis.; Mmes. L. E. Adams and G. Maurice Evans, Munising; Mrs. Herbert Buzzo, Daytona Beach, Fla; Mrs. Ernest Geraghty, Ely, Nev.; Ralph Broad, Anthony Broad, Crystal Falls; Henry Broad, of Negaunee. As the seventh son in his parents' family, it so happened that Captain Broad was the last survivor.
FRATERNAL AND OTHER AFFILIATIONS While always active in performance of his citizenship duties Capt. Broad never sought prominence. His services to the Republican party however, gained for him the post of sheriff of Marquette county, to which he was elected in 1896 and which he continued to hold for four years. In early life he had joined the Masonic Fraternity, and he was Emeritus member of both lodge and chapter; Negaunee and was a member Knight Templar commandery at Marquette. He was also a long-time member Ahmeek lodge, I. O. O. F., Ishpeming. During the years that the Presbyterian Church was in existence in Negaunee, Capt. Broad was a parishioner and was ever active in church work; in more recent years he had been an attendant at St. John's Episcopal Church. For a long period the family home had been near the east end of Main St, but following Capt. Broad's sale of his property to the Cleveland Cliff's Iron Company, he purchased a home at 304 Lincoln street.

MANY JOIN IN FINAL RITES Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, when many old time friends from various parts of the county, in addition to towns people with whom he had spent so many years, gathered to pay final tribute. The religious services were conducted by Rev. Thomas Foster, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, and the Masonic lodge, which attended in a body, performed its rights at the grave. Nine of the children were present for the funeral, illness in the homes of Mmes. Geraghty and Buzzo alone preventing the attendance of the remaining two.

OBITUARY: Published in Denver Post on Nov. 6, 2016:

Jane, 93, was born to Dr. Lawrence and Marjorie Bromfield. She grew up in Park Hill attending Smiley Junior High. She graduated from Denver's East High School in 1941. She entered Fairmont Junior College in Washington,DC, but with the start of World War II she returned to Denver, where she volunteered with the American Red Cross as a truck driver. After that she went to work for General Outdoor Advertising. She met her first husband, William W. Argall in 1945 and they were married on April 19, 1947 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Jane and Bill raised three children: Judith, Woodruff and Louise.

During the 1950s and 1960s Jane was active in the Junior League of Denver, primarily with that organization's children's theater. She was a founding member of the Cookie Jar Investment Club, an early investment group for women, and she was an anchor of the Capitol Hill neighborhood she called home for over 40 years. William W. Argall died October 7, 1973.

Jane married John C. Foster on October 26, 1974, and they enjoyed 33 happy years together. Jane and John were recycling pioneers long before Denver and other cities adopted the practice. They were also world travelers; cruising the seas for months at a time was a particular passion. John would say, "Let's go to New Zealand,"and Jane would reply, "My bags are packed." They even flew on the Concorde SST, indulging John's love of flying and his training as a pilot.

Jane was a long-serving volunteer at many Denver institutions, including the Denver Art Museum, the Salvation Army, La Cache for Children's Hospital and the Altar Guild of St Barnabas Episcopal Church. Jane and John had an extensive crèche collection and would display it each Christmas. Jane loved Denver and worked hard to make it a great city. She believed in social justice for everyone. She was loyal and dedicated to her family and friends. She was known for her quick wit and keen mind. As a testament to Jane and John Foster's commitment and support, both in time and gifts, St. Barnabas Church has announced that the chapel in the church's new Marshall House will be named the Foster Chapel in their memory.

Jane was predeceased by husband John C. Foster, Sister Joann Bromfield Filippini.

Survived by sister Barbara B. Williams, Encinitas, CA; her children Judith Argall Dalziel (Charles Wilson) Sacramento, CA; Woodruff (Woody) Argall, Los Angeles, CA; Louise Argall Olm (Mark) Tucson, AZ; Step Daughters Patricia Foster Langworthy (Terry) Libertyville, IL; Marti Foster, Murrieta, CA; Barbara A. At the time of Anne's death, major restoration work was being carried out at St. Mary's Church, where Charlotte had chosen to bury Anne. For this reason the funeral was conducted at Christ Church, which was situated near the top of Vernon Place (now Vernon Road) - only a few minutes walk from Wood's Lodgings, the place where Anne had died. This seems inadvertently appropriate, as it was in this church where Anne had worshipped with the Robinson family on their annual visits to Scarborough some five to nine years earlier. (Christ Church was demolished in 1979, the site being next to the current Scarborough Library - close to the centre of Westborough).
It is interesting to note the entry in the 'Register of Burials' - stating Anne was 'from near York'. Obviously this information would not have been obtained from Charlotte or Ellen Nussey who were with Anne at Scarborough when she died; proving that the clergyman of Christ Church had remembered her from her attendances with the Robinsons. Anne had spent five years as governess to the Robinson children at Thorp Green, which is located just ten miles north-west of York!

Anne's obituary: the wording was as follows: 'On the 28th inst, at this place, of consumption, Miss Anne Bronte of Brookroyd, Birstall near Leeds'. The incorrect address was obviously on account of Ellen Nussey arranging the entry; this was her own address.
