OBITUARY: Vaughnsville
March 25, 1892

Mr. Anthony Broad, Mine inspector of Marquette County, who was a brother to Mr. Emmanuel Broad, an old resident of this district, died at his home in Negaunee, on Sunday, the 13th Inst., at 4:o'clock in the afternoon. The late mine inspector on the 16th day of last month was taken down with a paralytic stroke. The indications at times were favorable for his recovery, but he continued to grow weaker until the 11th inst., when he became semi-unconscious, and remained in that condition until he succumbed to his sufferings, as above stated.

Mr. Broad was born at Chilaton, in the Parish of Milton Abbott, near Tavistock, Devonshire, Eng., on the 18th day of June, 1846. He came to this county in the spring of 1865, at the close of the war, arriving here, he started to work at the Cliff Mine. A couple of years after he went to Marquette County, where for many years he found employment as a mine machinist and engineer, and grew up step by step with the mining men and the great iron mine industry of that district. He was a heavy mining speculator and investor, and was in a fair way to prosper when death called him away. Mr. Broad ranked as one of the foremost citizens of English birth in Negaunee. He was the first mine inspector of the county appointed under the state law, a position which he continued to fill until the time of his death, and was regarded as one of the best mining men in the county. The city of Negaunee has lost in him a valuable and respected citizen and the county a valuable and painstaking officer.

The deceased leaves a widow and four children by a former wife, who are bereft of a fond husband and loving father. He also leaves four brothers - one at this place, one at Negaunee, one at Plymouth, Eng., and one at Sydney, New South Wales-and a sister at San Jose, California.

The funeral took place on Tuesday of last week, and was the largest of one seen in Negaunee for a long time. It was headed by the Sons of St. George, followed by the A.O.U.W. and Masonic Orders, of all of which the deceased was a member. The English Oak Band, being in attendance, played The Dead March The long and sad procession proceeded to the Episcopal Church, and from thence to the cemetery, where all that was mortal of Anthony Broad was consigned to the tomb, and laid to rest. The esteem of which Mr. Broad was held by his fellow citizen was clearly shown at his funeral by the people who came to do him honor even in death.

Anthony was the son of Athanasius Broad and Jane/Jenny Davy.
