In 1841 John (25) and Mary (23) were living with their children, Elizabeth (5) and "John" (2) at The Toll House, Brentor. Elizabeth was baptised at Lamerton on 12 Apl 1836 but I have been unable to find record of John. There was, however, a William Bennallack born 14 Jun 1839, s/o John and Mary (Bennallack) Cowling of Toll House, Brentor. The unavoidable conclusion must be that the census is in error.

Other family of John Cowling and and Anne Bennallack are:
Ellen was born 15 July 1842 to John and Mary Anne of Burn Cottage, Mary Tavy. (Birth Cert). Ellen (infant) was buried 16 Feb 1844, Brentor. (DFHS Index).
Artless Cowling (1 week) of North Brentor was buried 9 Dec 1834 Lamerton. No record of baptism has been found, but I suspect that name is corruption of Archaleous.

The only known Cowling families in Brentor at this time were: Robert/Joanna (Bennallack) and John/Mary Anne (Bennallack). Robert and Joanna baptised son William Bennallack on 16 Nov 1834, so not Artless's twin if records accurate. Artless, in all probability, son of John and Mary Anne.

OBITUARY: Mrs James Richards

Died, in this city Saturday morning, May 9, 1908 at 2:30 o'clock, Mrs James Richards, of creeping paralysis; aged 63 years past.

Deceased's maiden name was Matilda Bennellack. She was a native of England. On the 3d of June, 1863 she was married to Mr. James Richards of this place, and Mineral Point has been her home ever since. To this union twelve children were born, eleven of whom are living, one dying when two years old. Those present at the mother's funeral were: Oscar of Hall, Montana; Henry and Mrs Thos. Walters of Deer Lodge, Montana, Curtis of Linden; Mrs Jas. Whitford of Dodgeville; Frank and the Misses Clara and Pearl of this city. Those not present are John of Deer Lodge, Montana; Will of Alberta Canada; and Mrs Charles Francois of Medford, this state.

Mrs Richards was of a quiet, retiring nature, adhering faithfully and patiently to life's duties as they came, and resting comfortably in the assurance of a glorious hereafter. Thus the main link of another home has dropped out, and in their hour of trying affliction the bereaved husband and family have the condolence of a sympathetic community.

EMIGRATION: He appears to have migrated to the USA around 1848, but came back to Devon visiting around 1874.

The New York Passenger Lists Record lists: Ralph (aged 54) and Jane Bennallack (aged 58) travelling on THE CITY OF CHESTER from Liverpool to New York, docking on 24 Aug 1874.

OBITUARY:
Ralph Bennallack was born in the parish of Currichton, Devonshire England, Mar 4th, 1820, and died at his home in Dodgeville July 2 1884. When 28 years of age he emigrated to the U. S. making Mineral Point his home until 1851, when he left for Lake Superior. In 1855 he returned and settled in the town of Linden until 1870. Moving to Dodgeville he has ended his earthly existence here as above stated.

In 1870, during a very extensive revival in Diamond Grove, Bro. B. was led by the Spirit of God to renounce sin and to cleve unto Christ. His whole course subsequently was one of fidelity to the person and cause of his Master. His life in Dodgeville has been an exhibition of godliness. Humility, activity, self-denial and faith, have been very beautifully illustrated in his character. for years he has been the leader of the Sabbath morning class, and though for many months, yes, near two years, he has been almost unable to be active, the brethren still retained him as their leader, and rejoiced to see him in their modest, if only he could say like ancient John, "Little children love one another." Stronger men and woman have remained from the sanctuary with the pleas of illness, when our brother with scarcely breath to draw has climbed this hill, and waited on his God in the house he loved.

On Friday before his departure, with a few of his intimate friends, and at his own request, he received the sacrament. It was the he said, "Oh brethren, I feel I'm a sinner saved by grace."

Gradually wasting with consumption, he knew his end was not far off, when he expressed a dread of the last struggle, but his Heavenly Father was abundant in mercy, for the last of life did come, he quietly bowed his head, and without a struggle sank to sleep in his loving wife's arm.

He was buried on July 3rd, when Bro. Hewitt, who had been the instrument under God in his conversion, preached the funeral sermon. May the widow and children realize the blessed promises of the bible, when now are theirs and at last (?????) in heaven.
