Emigrated to New Zealand in 1885 with his wife. Thomas John BAWDEN 1859- 1934 lived in Albany NZ. He married Sophia WILLIAMS (b 1858- 1934). Their children were all born in Dairy Flat, lbany.

Thomas Henry Bawden, together with his brother Samual, had purchased opposing farms down a roadway named after the family. (Bawden Road, Dairy Flat). Tom's farm was on one side of the road and Sam's was on the other.
Tom's son, Des, purchased the farm from his father - Tom , and the parents lived there until their passing. The property was sold for development in 1975.
Sam's farm was only divided up in 2013. His children, Robert and Joseph, farmed the land and it is Robert's family who are living on the property now.

This was written at the same time by my Grandfather Tom Bawden and his brother Sam.

" Sam and I had to milk about a dozen cows by hand, before school in the mornings then we would put 6 bottles of milk (sold for a penny a bottle) in our pikaus and deliver these on horse back as far as Massey Rd to the gum diggers' whares which were dotted in among the tea tree along the road.
In the cold weather we would bath in the kitchen in a galvinised tub heated by kerosine tins of water from the stove, while in the summer we went down to the creek below the house and washed there.

All the settlers were struggling and in the same financial position and in the Christmas holidays we would go on horse and sledge with father and pick blackberries. These were sold for one penny a pound. Mr Hardy would pack them into 5 gallon drums and transport them by spring cart to the Wade, from whence they were shipped to Auckland. We also picked gum nuts for extra money.

Sam and I went road contracting for ten years beginning with a horse and scoop and receiving 2 pond per day which was not much as the horses had to be given good hard feed of bran and oats.
I was foreman on the road, receiving 5 pound per week. To shillings more than anyone else.
About 1907 Sam purchsed 80 acres of land for one pound and 10 shillings an acre. and made a point of breaking in 5 acres each year. In the depression the carpenter who built my house was paid only two shillings per hour.
"
