He apparently lived in (or owned a house in) the Manor of Tywarnhaile as the Court Roll for the years 1792-1798 record that "a special court within and for the said Manor (of Tywarnhaile) at the house of Samuel Argall situated in the parish of Saint Agnes on Tuesday 21st April in the thirty fifth year (i.e 1794) of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, etc. and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five Before John Edwards, the younger, Gentleman Deputy Steward and Michael Tonkin and Thomas Rowse, two of the Customary tenants of the said manor. Etc. ..14. In the same Court Roll there are records of the Court Leet which state: "At the Court Leet and Court Baron with view of Frank Pledge of our Soverign Lord the King and of his Royal Highness George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, Lord of the sd Manor held the second day of October One thousand seven hundred and ninety seven at the house of Samuel Argall, Innkeeper in the parish of Saint Agnes within and for the said Manor before John Edwards the Younger Gentleman Deputy Steward of the said Court."

Among the 12 jurors of the court was John Argall (#I157) who was Samuel's brother. (COURT LEET: In the 14th. Century this was a type of judicial court for the trying of small offences. These courts were run by a Lord who took over jurisdiction over offences which had previously been exercised by the Sheriff. It would meet twice a year, under the lord's steward, who acted as Lawyer and Judge. It was said that they didn't have the right to imprison, only to exert fines, and the proceeds of these went to the lord whose court it was. By the 17th. Century most of these functions had been taken over by the Justices of the Peace, (but of course, in Cornwall, the JP was often the Lord of the Manor anyway, so I'm not sure that humble folk like us saw much difference!). COURT BARON was the medieval 'Halimoot' (sometimes known as a Court Moot, I believe) and this was a court held by, and for, the tenants of a Lord. It would be used every few weeks, to resolve disputes between tenants [a sort of medieval version of what we would today call 'conciliation and arbitration] and again, by the 17th. century, was dying out. Much of the business of the court was to administer the 'custom of the manor' and the suitors acted as jurymen / judges over each other) . St Agnes Deeds.

Samuel Argall paid for dialing expenses March 1789, March 1797 and March 1802 (Wheal Trevaunance Cost Book 1775-1804 CRO: EN 1673).

Cornwall Record Office Catalogue Ref. AD102:

It looks as if Samuel was a mine surveyor (dialing etc), but also 'setting pitches' sounds like the mine captains job.

Apparently, at one time, he ran a Musical Band in St Agnes. For many years during the latter part of the 19th century, there were two Bands in St Agnes. There was great rivalry between Mr Sam. Argall's Band and Capt. Roberts' Band, especially at election times. On one occasion in about 1880, through a misunderstanding, both bands journeyed to Rejerrah to fill the same engagement. Sam. Argall was told the Committee were sorry, but that Capt. Roberts' Band had been engaged. "We've come here to play" was the retort, "and play we will". And so one band played in the field and the other gave a rival concert outside the hedge!®

He also published an MS Carol Book in 1879.

"I must admit I don't know a lot about Samuel, except that he was the brother of Mary Ann Argall, and came from St. Agnes, Cornwall. I do know he was a fisherman at one time, and lived in a cottage down Peterville, St. Agnes, called Argall Cottage. Unfortunately that has now been changed to Gargole Cottage". [ Josephine Bee [elizabeth@elizabethbee04.wanadoo.co.uk].

Bruce Argall (#744) has a silver tea service presented to "P or J G Samuel Argall in 1869 ' by the members of the Loyal St Agnes Lodge and by the Committee of the Juvenile Society of Odd Fellows for his valuable services'". According to Bruce, Samuel Argall apparently later ran an engineering business in Truro.

From the Royal Cornwall Gazette on 11 May 1911:
Mr and Mrs Samuel Argall of Peterville celebrated their Golden Wedding on Friday.

He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1588 when, like his brothers, he was bequeathed the sum of £10 per annum for life. In 1605, Thomas Argall left him £50 and this was followed in 1611 by Sir Reginald's legacy of £200 and a life annuity of £50 (only following the death of Sir Reginald's wife Anne - who outlived him).

MILITARY: Samuel had early miltary experience in Holland in the Dutch wars of independence from Spain.

The Kent Archives Office RCHM lxxvii ii 521 "De L'Isle Manuscripts D34" records the following letter from Sir William Browne to Sir Robert Sydney from Flushing dated 20 June 1601: "Since my last, which was but yesterday, I have a letter from Lieut Argull dated Sunday last (14 June 1601), which I enclose. I hear that since the wryting thereof, the battery is planted, butt that itt hath playd, I cannot learne; also that on Tuesday last the enemy made an other sally. I know not whether the state of the town is so desparate as the world makes it, by reason that yesternight came a letter to make all the miners go from Ostend to his excellency. Lord North parted on Monday from Eutrich towards the leaguer. The English camp lie quiet; the enemy never troubles them, only many are taken straggling. I look for Derrick with his boat to be released for 100£. I have yet no satisfaction from the States of Zeland, I send your lordship a little tobacco, becaus I esteem it extraordinarily good."

On 13th December 1603 at Flushing, Sir William Browne writes to Lord Sydney "The bearer Lieut Argull desires to be recomended to you for preferment. It will help much if you will speak to Sir Francis Vere for him." (The report continues with a further military report) (RCHM lxxvii 111 79-80 of the De L'Isle Manuscripts vi 168).

The records of the Guild of Merchant Tailors show that Capt. Samuel Argall was in the employ of the Virginia Company of London in 1609 and was commissioned to discover a shorter route to Virginia and to fish for sturgeon, valued for the caviar. He sailed west from the Azores to Bermuda and thence to the James River instead of going south to the tropics and west with the trade winds. His voyage took only nine weeks and six days including two weeks becalmed. This new route enabled the English to avoid the Spaniards and to save on provisions.

He was sent, in May, 1609, with a small vessel to the new settlement at Jamestown, Va., to trade and fish. The following year he took out form England Lord De la Ware to Jamestown, arriving in time to save the colony from starvation. In 1612, he carried off the Indian Princess, Pocahontas to the settlement of Jamestown. Later in the year sent with a vessel of fourteen guns to destroy the French settlements on the north coast; this was later regarded as infringing on the Virginia patent. He captured Mount Desert, St. Croix, and Port Royal. On the return voyage forced the commandant at New Amsterdam (now New York) to recognize English suzerainty by hauling down the Dutch flag and running up the English. In May, 1617, he was made deputy governor of Virginia.

A deposition taken on the 4 August 1620 states that SAMUEL ARGALL of EAST SUTTON, in KENT is aged 40 (ie. he was born in 1580). According to Went as a trader in 1609 to Virginia, whither he subsequently made frequent voyages. An account of his voyage from Jamestown, beginning June 19, 1610, in which " missing Bermuda, he put over towards Sagadahoc and Cape Cod," and his letter respecting his voyage to Virginia in 1613, will be found in the collection of Purchas. He visited the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay 1612-1613; reduced French settlements in Maine, St Croix, and Nova Scotia 1613. In 1612/13, with the ship TREASURER, he abducted the Indian Princess POCAHONTAS, through the favour of a Copper Kettle, and brought her to England. Appointed Governor of the Colony of Virginia on 9 April 1617 until 9 May 1619, and was also Admiral of the adjacent seas in 1617. In 1620 served, under Sir Robert Mansell, against the Algerine pirates.

Was knighted by King James I on 26 June 1622.

On 15 Jan 1623 he was appointed as Admiral of New England (CSPC).

Appointed Admiral in 1625 of a squadron of English and Dutch ships operating on French and Spanish coasts 1625-6. On 16 September 1625, he commanded 24 English and 4 Dutch ships off Dunkirk. His squadron, cruising after a hostile Dunkirk fleet, took some prizes. In October, 1625, he was with the futile expedition against Cadiz under Lord Wimbledon.

He reconnoitred Cadiz on 9 November 1625, and was reported to have died (or wounded and died of wounds) on 24 January 1626. However, a record of his burial in the Churchyard of St Gluvias (now Penryn, Falmouth) in Cornwall exists in the parish burial register. Cadiz (in Spain) is within four days sailing range from Falmouth. So this could be possible if his body was brought back from Cadiz by sea as Falmouth would have been the first port of call on mainland England.

MARRIAGE: Generally thought to have died unmarried, but the ARGALL PEDIGREE, published in THE GENESIS OF THE UNITED STATES states that he had a daughter ANNE. There is a tree on Rootsweb stating he married Sarah MICHAEL YEARDLEY in Virginia; Sarah is shown as the daughter of John MICHAEL and Elizabeth THOROWGOOD. However this might be a confusion with a Captain Argall Yeardley.

There is (or was) a Parish in Virginia known as ARGALLS GIFT PARISH. (A type of land dedicated to the founders of British colonial dominion).
