Supposedly purchased East Sutton Park, near Maidstone in Kent, from John Tufton of Hothfield, but more likely inherited the estate from his father. Was married twice. His second marriage is recorded in the IGI. He inherited most of the family property when his father died in 1563 and was left 100 marks in his father's Will. On 16 September 1564, he was licensed by the Court of Wards to enter his father's estate. He married his second wife after this date. By 1580, he was frequently ill and was usually excused attendance on the commission of the peace. By virtue of the provisions in his father's Will, he succeeded his brother Lawrence in the office of registrar of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1585 and held the post until his own death in 1588/9.

He wrote his Will on 6 June 1588 and was dead by the time it was proved on 12 February 1589. His own memorial in East Sutton Church reads: "Richard Argall of East Sutton in the County of Kent, Esquire, deceased Anno Domini 1588, leaving five sonnes and six daughters living. Mary his second wife, one of the daughters of Sir Reginald Scott, of Scott Hall, in the County of Kent, Knight, marryed the second tyme to Lawrence Washington, Esquire, dyed in Anno 1605, whose souls resting in peace, their bodies lye here interred, attending the General Resurrection."

He followed several occupations: he was a Carpenter (1824 and 1832) for which he served an apprenticeship, a Victualler and, later, the Innkeeper of the Peterville Inn, St Agnes. (In the 1844 Pigot & Co Directory of Cornwall, Thomas JAMES is listed as Lincensee of the PETERVILL INN Public House, St Agnes). He was still in St Agnes in January 1836 where he was a witness at marriage of his sister, Elizabeth Argall to Sampson Tamblyn. However, in the 1841 census, although still living in St Agnes, Richard is listed as a Miner. On 18 Aug 1842, he was assessed as paying rent in lieu of tithes to the Vicar of St Agnes, in the sum of 3s 6d.

An old sketch of Peterville is dated between 1838 and 1841. A particular building shows that the Peterville Inn is between the 1838 Barnicoats tin bound map and the 1841 Tithe map. On this map it shows Nettles House, where the Victoria pub was and John Nettles was certainly the licensee in 1841. (I take "House" to mean pub). Where the Peterville Inn is, it says "Argalls House"; I therefore assume this was also a pub run by an Argall and presumably Richard.

I have also found a further reference to Richard Argall at the Peterville Inn. In the book 'Portrait of a Cornish Village' by Frank Pearce, published in 1977 he tells a story of the Inn "One of the former owners of the pub, Dick Argall, brewed his own beer using water from a nearby stream. The result was a remarkably potent brew that attracted hard drinkers from far and wide." Unfortunately Frank does not give his source although he did interview older residents during his research in 1977.

MIGRATION: Emigrated to the USA in September 1841, aboard the GLASGOW sailing from Liverpool to New York. There is no mention of his first wife, Ann, travelling with him nor of her landing in America.

CYCLE CRASHED INTO TREE
Kiata Footballer's Death
WAS RETURNING HOME FROM DANCE
Sister Found Brother Unconcious

Following severe head injuries, which he rceeived when his motor cycle crashed into a tree, the death occurred in a private hospital at Dimboola at 7 o'clock on Sunday morning of a Mr. Richard ("Dick'") Argall, 20-year-old son of Mrs. and the late Mr. George Argall, of Kiata. When it was found that the Nhill football team was short of players on Saturday, the services of five Kiata men were requisitioned, and amongst those who volunteered was the deceased, who incidentaily, was playing his first game with the senior team. After the special train returned to Nhill from Minyap, the late Mr. Argall secured his motor cycle froml F. J. Williams Motors, where he was employed, and proceeded to Gerang where he attended a dance. At the termination of this function he set out for Kiata and was preceded by a car. which also contained his sister (Rene).
When about a quarter of a mile from their homestead, the sister failed to discern the light of the motor cycle and the car was turned back to investigate. The occupants were alarmed to find the deceased lying unconscious on the roadway a few yards from the machine and in front of the Kiata Cemetery. He was immediately conveyed to Dimboola, where it was disclosed that he was suffering from a fractured skull. Consciousness never returned and the young man passed away on Sunday morning. At the time of the accident the deceased was following a sandy track, which turned in and out between trees, and from investigations it is sur- mised that the machine skidded in the sand. Marks indicate that the cycle then swerved towards a tree and struck it with great force. The impact probably threw the unfortunate victim into the tree also and his head came into contact with it. The funeral took place at the Kiata Cemetery yesterday and was largely attended.

BURIAL: He is buried in Kiata Cemetery.

The Horsham Times (Vic. : 1882 - 1954) - Friday 21 March 1913:
ARGALL-DAHLENBURG. Friends-to the number of over 200 as sembled at "Roseneath" on Wednesday, 12th inst., at the invitation of Mr. F. C. Dahlenburg, to witness the marriage of his second daughter, Clara Ethel, with Mr. George Frederick Argall. Both the young people were well and favorably known, having spent their girlhood and boyhood days in the Kiata district, and during that period have nobly assisted in any movement appertaining to the district's welfare. As the bride entered on the arm of her father, followed by her pretty bridesmaids, ,Misses H. Dahlenburg and M. Argall, and two dainty little train bearers (Misses Doris and Nita Dahlenburg), the Kiata Methodist choir rendered in an excellent manner that well known hymn " The Voice that Breathed o'er Eden," while Mr. Jas. Hastle, of Nhill, presided at the organ. The bride groom was supported by Messrs, D. Dahlenburg and Alf. Walsgott. The Rev. Walton, of the Nhill Methodist Church, performed the ceremony in his customary able manner. The bride's dress, which was much admired by the fair sex, was a beautiful white satin charmeuse, trimmed with guilpure macrame insertion, all- over lace and edgings, and court train trimmed withl orange blossom and ruchings of cretonne net, and wore the customary wreath and veil arranged cap fashion, also carried a bouquet of white flowers and maiden hair fern, and wore a becoming amethyst and pearl pendant necklet, gift of the bridegroom. About 5 o'clock an adjournment was made to the large marquee on the grounds, where the breakfast was to take place. T'he tables were very artistically decorated, the bridal table being exquisitely arranged. Fully 150 sat down, and the catering, which was in the able hands of Mr. E. Culliver, of Horsham, was commented upon on all sides for its excellency. We (Nhill Press) are inclined to think that Mr. Culliver excelled him self in the culinary art on Wednesday, and the district is indeed fortunate in having aI gentleman who is so capable. After the usual toasts were honored games were indulged in until the shades of night fell, when the young folk adjourned to the music hall to dance, while the elder folk joined in cards and conversation. In this manner the time was spent until the supper bell sounded about midnight. After the meal, dancing was resumed and kept going with vigor until daylight. At about 6 a.m. the tired but happly guests sat down to a sumptuous hot breakfast, prepared by Mr. Culliver, which was thoroughly enjoyed.

MAN BURNED TO DEATH.
Petrol Ignites.

COMPANION'S NARROW ESCAPE.
MELBOURNE, September 25.
Richard George Argall, farmer, of Kiata, in the Mallee, was burned to death when a 44-galIon drum of petrol ignited early to-day. Argall went with Keith Hateley to a barn, where the drum was stored, to get petrol for a car. Argall carried a lighted lantern, and Hateley was pouring petrol into a two-gallon measure when the petrol Ignited. A wall of fire cut off escape from the barn. Argall and Hateley got bags to try to extinguish the flames. Hateley escaped from the burning building, and thought Argall followed. When he discovered that Argall was missing he roused the household. Men smashed open the side of the barn with axes, and found Argall's body badly charred.

The VICTORIA GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, dated December 28th, 1934, shows: Samuel Argall to be a Trustee of Public Cemetery in Kiata, vice Richard G Argall, deceased.

OBITUARY: The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 6 October 1849:

BATHURST.
Coroner's Inquest. One was held on 28th September, at Mr Horan's Inn, The Travellers' Rest, George Street, on the body of a man named Richard Argall, who had died suddenly at Mr Horan's that morning. The deceased, a fine young man about twenty three years old, was a miner, employed at the Summer-hill Mine; that on the morning of Wednesday, the 19th September, he, with a companion, went out for a day's sport, each possessed a fowling piece; they had to cross a creek; the deceased was in the act of crossing the bank of it; the lock of the gun became entangled with his coat, and the piece exploded lodging the contents in the fleshy part of the right side and injuring a vein; the wound was bound up as well as could be on the spot, and the deceased, accompanied by his father, came into Bathurst to procure medical aid and they put up at Mr Horan's Inn, where every attention was paid. Doctor Machattie was sent for and promptly attended and dressed the wound. A few days later after, on removing the dressing, the wound was considered in a healthy and improving state; but on the morning of his death the deceased had made some motion with his arm which caused the blood vessel to burst, a great effusion of blood followed, and within twenty minutes after, and before medical aid could be procured, the man was dead. Verdict - Accidental death, caused by a gun-shot wound.

It was about 50 years ago when the late Mr. Argall came to Australia, and shortly after he found his way to Gerang, where he was engaged by Messrs. Cobb and Co., who had a relay station at Gerang. BURIAL: From his neice, Carol Smith: I went over to the cemetery office today and found out that Richard Pierce died on October 12,1927. The records show that he was married, but listed as next of kin it just said Mrs.Argall. (However there is continuing doubt that he ever married). It did not list her first name. It said he lived in Detroit. He is buried in the Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Michigan. We found Richard Pearce's Aliens Order, 1920. It is dated June,30, 1924. It looks to me like he made 2 trips. He came back to the United States on 1-5-1925. Then there is another stamp that is from Cornwall Constabulary dated April 29, l925. My sister seems to remember someone saying that he got sick on one of the trips. She isn't sure but she thinks he got Tuberculosis. There is a picture of him on this booklet and the number 198321.

GENERAL NOTES:
Never married.

Educated at Woraigworm State school 2619. Rita helped with general farm work, milking cows, gardening and tending to hens until she was 18 years of age when she developed a mysterious illness that baffled top specialists at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The specialists thought that she was suffering from Encaphalitis Lethargica ( a form of sleeping sickness). She had a operation when she was 9 years of age for a brain tumor, but Doctors say that psycological factors may have been responsible for her sleeping turns 9 years later. These sleeping turns could last from a few days to nearly six months.

WOMAN SLEEPS 6 MONTHS; WAKES IN GOOD HEALTH
Sydney, Australia, July 17th (AP) - Rita Argall, 25, has awakened from a six months sleep and seems in good health.
Five days after she was moved 250 miles from her home in north-western Victoria to the Royal Melbourne hospital here, Miss Argall awoke last night after special treatment. She sat up in bed and talked cheerfully for the first time since she went into a coma Jan. 4.
A hospital attache said physicians had not diagnosed her illness finally, but her response to their treatment had suggested a method of curing her permanently. She will be kept in the hospital under observation.

Later when she appeared to be over her illness, she went to work in Melbourne as a Nanny.

DEATH: Died on 8 Aug 1947, aged 25 years, and is buried in Kiata Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Her Obituary published in 1947 reads: "MISS RITA ARGALL After suffering from a puzzling malady over the last seven years which subjected her to long periods of coma, Miss Rita Argall, aged 25 years, a daughter of Mrs A W Argall of Kiata, and the late Mr Argall, died at 5 pm last Saturday in the Royal Melbourne Hospital following an operation on the previous Monday. Miss Argall had been admitted to the hospital for medical supervision and treatment four weeks ago, after awakening from a coma that had endured since January last. Her death came as a grievous shock to her people and friends, who believed that she had successfully survived the operation. Mrs Argall was with her daughter on Friday and, though her condition was inclined to be low and depressed, it was not believed to be alarming or critical. Miss Argall had previously been in Hospital last September. On that occasion she awakened after four days and remained normal for about a month. The Deceased, who in her normal condition was plump, strong and healthy and of a cheerful disposition, was born in Nhill and attended school at Woraigworm. Sypathy for their loss is expressed to her mother, brothers, Lawrence and Maxwell and sister Gwenneth (Mrs Pilmore). Another brother, Edward, was killed whilst on active service in the last war. A service will be conducted tomorrow at the Kiata Methodist Church by the Rev. C R Addinsall, and the interment will take place at 2.30 pm in the Kiata Cemetery.

BURIAL: She is buried in Kiata Cemetery.
