Their children were: - William (Gwennap 17 Mar 1811) who probably died before 1816
- John (Gwennap 30 Apr 1809 P79/1/4)
- Marianne Orgill (Redruth 1 August 1813 P197/1/12)
- William 17 Mar 1816. The last two have their mother listed as Phillis and they were residing at Little Sins (a place in Redruth).

The 1841 Census has additional 5 children listed but none of those above. The youngest is aged 10 in 1841, which would make her 46 when the youngest was born - possible, I suppose!

DEATH: Death is recorded in the GRO Indexes for the Redruth Registration District in the September quarter of 1849 under reference 9.213. Name is recorded as PHILLIS HOCKING.

PTE. P. ARGALL WOUNDED.
Mr. and Mrs. Argall, of Edward-st., Orange, on Saturday received a wire to the effect that their second son, Pte Preston Argall, had been wounded in the recent fighting. It is probably only a minor wound - we hope it is, and are led to that belief through the authorities not inserting '"seriously." Pte. Argall had just entered the firing line, after a sojourn in a British hospital of six months from a shapnel wound in the heel.

There are surreal qualities about the advance to Polygon Wood, in front of Ypres, where Preston was killed: "At dawn on 20th September 1917, after five days bombardment - the Australians were supported by a gun to every five yards - ...The Australian infantry closed up towards the front, and in a single line - all waves together - followed the great barrage half a mile to the first objective; then, after an hour's pause, followed it again to the second; and finally, after a further two hour pause (during which in Neligan's 10th Battalion London newspapers were distributed to the troops), 200 yards to the third. Famous landmarks of earlier fighting - ... and part of Polygon Wood, the shattered remains of a young plantation - were retaken."

Correspondence from Dennis on 9 Sep 98. Edward St Orange Saturday 15.12.17 To Officer in Charge Base Records Victoria Barracks Dear Sir I am writing to see if you can give me any information concerning my son Private P.E.Argall No 5292 B Company 17 Battalion. He has been reported to us as Wounded and Missing [since 20 September] by your Department. I am in receipt of one of his comrades from France - yesterday, dated 20th October - and this is a copy of it - My dear Madam I am very sorry to extend my most heartfelt sympathy in the very sad bereavement which you have suffered in the loss of your Dear Son who was killed in action on or about the 20 of September. I quite understand it was a severe and sad shock to you all. He has died a heroes death which he is honoured and to be proud of for the great cause in which he died. I can assure you dear Madam that he suffered nothing because his death was instantaneous so his suffering where very little and I took it upon myself the sad duty to bury him which I did the best I could under the circumstances on the battlefield and placed a little cross to mark the spot of a faithful comrade respected and loved by all whom he came in contact with in his own unit and out of it, and dear Madam, in regards his personal effects I have carefully arranged to have forwarded to you and should you seek further information I am only too willing to assist as far as I am possible should you write to 4661 Private WH Beck A Coy 21st Battalion. and then, on 29 April 1918,

Tom writes, in reply to a letter from the Army saying that the above information is still being investigated: Your letter dated April 23rd to hand concerning my Son Private P.E. Argall 5292. I thank you for the trouble that you have gone to over him - but I might state that I am in receipt of another letter from Private Beck in answer to the one that I wrote to him and he assured me that he buried him on the battle field. I have also seen returned soldiers that knew him, and seen him laying unconscious on the battlefield his head covered in blood and a large pool where he laid, this was from a comrade who was with him at Liverpool Camp and who knew him quite well and he writing to his parents said that he was posted up as killed, so that is quite proof enough for me that my son is dead, the only thing I cannot understand why the authorities in France cannot supply some definite information when he is posted up as dead... I can assure you that it has crushed the both of us losing the two of our sons. I know there are many even worse off than we are that is they have lost more sons. But one satisfaction to us is that they have shed their blood for freedom and righteousness and I am sure if I had more I would not withold them from going to do their duty. I am Sir, Yours Respectfully T. Argall

Tom was soon after advised that a Board of Enquiry had on 27 April declared Preston, Killed in Action on 20 September 1917. A Death Certificate was not signed until September 1918, and Preston's effects, 'Wallet, testament, photos, cards, letters' were forwarded to Annie (named as beneficiary in Preston's August 1917 will) on 10 October 1918. OBITUARY: Leader (Orange, NSW : 1912 - 1922) - Mon 17 Dec 1917 Page 4:

PRIVATE PRESTON ARGALL.
Mr. and Mrs. T. Argall's cup of sorrow is brimming over with bitterness. Two sons they had, both of
whom accepted the call to war, and now both have paid the penalty of Empire with their lives. Bert, the first to fall behind the old flag which led our boys to where the descendants of Attila were murdering women, and children, was the first to fall, and on June 23rd of last year, he was one of
those who answered the awful command to charge, without a murmur, and then rolled back upon a sea of blood, charged yet once more over the dead bodies of their comrades, but this time, although victory was theirs, the gallant soldier was not alive to enjoy the fruits of conquest.
And now the grief stricken parents have received word that their second son, Private Preston Argall, who was reported wounded and missing on September 20th, is numbered among the noble band of Australian heroes, who have given up their lives for liberty in the bloodiest and most destructive war the world has ever seen.
These gallant lads from our towns and villages, who donned the khaki to preserve the civilisation of the Anglo-Saxon race, the priceless heritage of two thousand years of struggle, is one to appal the wisdom of the age.
Everyone of those soldiers entered the war with a sorrowful heart, but a soul clear in the sense of tragic duty. What tongue can tell the tragedy which is being enacted in Europe, where the earth is being baptised in the blood of hundreds of thousands of our braves, and a new map is being made. Here is a mere lad, of 19 summers, the last hope and pride of a loving father and mother, shot down by a German bullet, while charging in the wake of the grand old blood stained banner of freedom and civilisation, the Union Jack of Old England. And yet how many are there amongst us to-day who stand idly by, not offering to raise a hand, or to go to the assistance of their fallen brothers, who are fighting for their very existence. Here's a chance now for some able bodied young man of Orange to fill a gap, aim a blow at the enemy, and by so doing avenge the death of young Preston Argall, who was a soldier and a man from his boots up. The sympathy of the whole
community goes out to his bereaved parents. In this the darkest hour of their lives, and God knows it is dark for everyone of us, if we could only bring ourselves to see it in all its hideousness.
Private W. H. Back, of 21st Battalion, writes:
France, 20/10/1917. To Mrs. Argall. I am very sorry to extend my heartfelt sympathy in the very sad bereavement which you have suffered in the loss of your dear son, who was killed in action on or about September 20th. He died a hero's death in a just cause. He suffered nothing, because his death was instantaneous.
I took upon myself the sad duty of burying him, which I did the best I could under the circumstances on the battlefield. I placed a little cross above his grave to mark the spot of a faithful comrade, loved and respected by all who came in contact with him in his own unit and outside as well. I have arranged to send his personal effects to you. I apologise for not telling you before, but I have since been wounded and unable to do so."

On Thursday Mr. Argall received, the following letter from their son written on September 18th, 1917, two days before he was reported wounded and missing:
"My dearest Mum and Dad, I am scribbling you a few lines to let you know I am still going well. I think you could read between the lines of my last letter that we were going into a big battle. Well, it has not come off yet, but don't worry. I feel sure God will bring me through it. Oh how great it is to have the Lord with you. I don't know how the boys get on that don't have Christ as their Saviour, but I think a great number of them change before facing death. I pray for them, as well as
I do for myself. We were up near the lines on fatigue the other night. There was one place in particular named "Hell Shell Corner," and, by Jove, he does shell it. We had to get into shell-holes and wait awhile till the shelling ceased. Then we ran along the road. One poor chap was that winded and I think frightened that he wanted to lay down, but I got hold of his arm and simply dragged him along. We all laughed about it after we got through. Mind you, the German shells us, but, oh it must be simply hell on his side of the lines, as we send over twenty shells to his one. You should hear the roar, and see the flashes of our flames every where. There is one big gun near our dugout, and every time she goes off it makes you blink.
Well, Mum and Dad, there is not much news. Tell Miss Dwyer I received a letter from her yesterday. I think I told you I saw Jack a couple of days ago, he is looking well. I will write again
as soon as I get a chance. Now, don't worry, God will take care of his children. Remember me to all friends. With heaps of love to you both. From your fond and loving son, Press
."

He hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. (Hebrews 13-5. 13/5)..
