MIGRATION: (See also #117). There is much confusion and speculation about these two individuals. He may have married around 1807 (but he would only have been 20) and fathered a daughter in 1808 but his US immigration details suggest he went to America in 1810 or 1812. Early records are notoriously unreliable. Early Methodist records lists a William Argall in New York in 1795 (if this is he, he would be only 13).

The Cornishman - Thursday 01 July 1937: Honour for Penzance man to see the King.

Seasider writes in the "West Lancashire Evening Gazette": I hear that of the Freemasons of the county invited to a Grand Lodge of England Ceremony in the Royal Albert Hall, London, on Wednesday evening, is Mr Arthur Argall. The King will be present at the ceremony and act as one of its principals. Mr Argall is honoured by this invitation, for the number of people privileged to attend has necessarily had to be limited. It was seven years ago that this man, who is the immediate past president of a London Lodge, came to the Fylde. Today he is the managing director of Burton's Gold Medal Biscuits. One day in 1922, when he was living in London, and after he had achieved high honours in the examinations of the City and Guilds of London Institute, he found in his mail bag a letter inviting him to attend at the Guild Hall. There he had conferred upon him the Freedom of the City of London. Mr Argall is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Argall, Redinnick.

Phillis died in 1838.

Second marriage: He married for a second time to a widow named Mary Rogers, who was much older. The marriage appeared to be one of convenience to look after their children and to emigrate. The marriage is recorded in GRO Indexes for the Redruth Registration District, under reference 9.276 in the March quarter of 1840. The couple are listed as William Argall and Mary Rogers.

MIGRATION: He travelled to New Zealand aboard the BLENHEIM which sailed from Plymouth, England, on 2 July 1842; arriving in New Plymouth, New Zealand, on 19 November 1842. He travelled in a part of an Argall/Rogers group (although under the spelling ARGLE), and travelling Steerage class. They are listed as: William aged 40, Mary aged 40, William aged 17, Richard aged 11, Grace aged 9, Elizabeth aged 7. The Rogers are listed as: John aged 20, Thomas aged 19, Eliza aged 18, Francis aged 15, Henry aged 11, Edward aged 8. .

William bought a property from the NZ Company in April 1843. Mary lived for some years at New Plymouth.

However as the Argalls and Rogers were miners, New Plymouth provided limited work in that field, so they moved to Auckland in January 1845.

William ARGALL would appear to have split from the family before 1851. He had moved to New South Wales, Australia with his children. On 26th May 1846, William Argall, Thomas Rogers with wife Janet, and John Rogers with wife Charlotte [wife pre-Jane Robertson], sailed on the "Samuel Boddington" from Auckland to Australia. He is listed as Wm. Argyle. From the information on the shipping manifest, it seems they probably came from Kawau Island.

He lived in New South Wales for 2 years, Adelaide for 1 year, and Victoria for 14 years. He clearly returned to England for a period around 1858 when he bought a horse for his father.

DEATH: Died in Australia aged 68. Cause of death: Asthma for 8 years, and had no medical attendance for 12 months. Death is registered in the State of Victoria, Australia under reference 2036.

Argall, William Henry:
Argall, William Henry , General Mining Manager and Consulting Engineer, was born on the 8th of August 1855, at St. Austell, Cornwall, England. He was educated mainly at the Church of England School at Breage, Cornwall, finishing at the Helston Grammar School. Captain Argall's first acquaintance with mining was in the year 1870, at the Great Wheal Vor United Mines, Cornwall. Whilst there, he attended the mining school, and studied mining, mineralogy, chemistry, and geology. In 1873 he went to South Wales, under engagement with Messrs Brogden and Sons, to acquire a knowledge of coal mining and the manufacture of iron. A year later found him at Linares Silver Lead Mines, in the south of Spain, being engaged by Messrs. John Taylor and Sons, London. While in that part of the world he gained a good experience of mining and smelting, staying in the country for seven years, when he was appointed assistant manager of some tin and copper mines in Cornwall; this position he held for some two years. In 1883 he was engaged by the Frontino and Bolivia Gold Mining Company, Ltd., London, to proceed to their mines (at that time nine in number) in the United States of Colombia, northern part of South America. With this company, he held the post of mining inspector for their several mines. On his return to England, Captain Argall was again sent to Spain on business connected with mining, and, after a stay of four months, was despatched to Mexico, as superintendent of a large silver mine. He first arrived in New Zealand in the beginning of January, 1888. His experience in the Colony has been very varied, and he has an intimate knowledge of the Coromandel Peninsula generally, and also of parts of the South Island. At one time Captain Argall was general manager and consulting engineer to the following companies:'97 Kapanga Gold Mining Company. Ltd., Blagroves' Freehold Gold Mining Company, Ltd., Kathleen Crown, Ltd., Preece's Point Proprietary (Hauraki), Ltd., Tararu Creek Gold Mining Company, Ltd., The Hauraki Golden Age Mines, Ltd., Komata Queen. Ltd. He is a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London, and vice-president of the New Zealand Institute of Mining Engineers. His connection with the famous Hauraki Mine, Coromandel, is well known, as under his management the rich ore was first discovered.
During his career Captain Argall has inpected mines in various parts of Europe, and in his travels throughout the world has had many opportunities of examining several countries. His experience in mining has been varied, embracing tin, copper, iron, lead, manganese, antimony, silver, and gold. Captain Argall was initiated into the mysteries of Freemasoury in Spain in 1878, the ceremony being conducted throughout in the Spanish language. He married Miss Emilie Allen Edmonds, of Penzance. Cornwall, who died in 1887. leaving him an only daughter.

On Sept 26, 1895, The New York Times reported that The State Department had succeeded in settling an indemnity claim against the Guatemalan Government on behalf of three Americal Laborers, one of whom was W H Argall. The matter had been pending for over a year. The men were laborers on the farm of a Belgian named Van De Puttem near Guatemala and under orders from him, removed a shed which the Guatemalan Government claimed as its property. They were arrested without warrant and confined in a filthy den, sleeping on the rock floor, and being treated as the most guilty of criminals for twelve days when they were released without bond. Argall had suffered physical injuries at the hands of the prison official. Argall had asked to see the Commandant of the Penitentiary, when the attendant without deigning to reply, struck him four blows across the back with a rawhide inflicting great welts. Argall had made no resistance believing that had he done so he would have been murdered. ..... Argall had been paid an indemnity of $600.

Birth details taken from his Certificate of Registration of an American Citizen No 672 given by the US Consul-General in Guatemala City on August 20th, 1912, which lists his Uncles as William Holland, and Tom Holland, both of Galena, Illinois.
