"Philip Argall's practical work to commercialize gold cyanidation changed the course of the gold industry. When introduced in the early 1890s, gold cyanidation aroused significant skepticism, not least on the part of Argall himself. However, in the summer of 1893, working as a consultant, Philip Argall went to a failing Deadwood, South Dakota, cyanide mill built in 1891-1892 and, with plant modifications, made it work. It was the first of its kind.
"Next, Philip Argall took the Brodie Mill in the Cripple Creek District from "fiasco" to success. Within three years, this 30-ton-per-day mill was expanded to 400 tons per day, the largest in the Cripple Creek District.
"In 1893, Philip Argall was proffered the job of designing from scratch and operating a new plant to process Cripple Creek ores at Cyanide, Colorado. Argall designed the 400-ton-per-day Metallic Extraction Company mill at Cyanide to include massive dryers and roasters, rows of roll crushers, and a cyanide vat structure the size of a football field. Argall started the cyanide process by roasting ores ahead of cyanidation. In this processing step, he was soon was using multi-tubular roasters of his own design.
"The plant at Cyanide was the world's first for direct treatment of sulfa-telluride ores. Mines throughout the West studied and copied it: at Congress, Arizona's biggest gold mine; at Delamar, Nevada's biggest gold camp; and at Mercur, Utah, where the size of the Golden Gate mill eclipsed Philip Argall's Cyanide mill by 1898.
"In the spring of 1899, Philip Argall introduced the 8-hour work shift at the Metallic Extraction Company mill. Argall's mill was the first in Colorado to adopt the 8-hour shift. This work practice attracted a better class of worker, reduced turnover, and increased production per man hour. Later in his career, Philip Argall called the introduction of the 8-hour shift his greatest accomplishment. At the same time, Argall said, "It has been my privilege to see the cost of treating Cripple Creek ores by wet methods reduced from $15 per ton in 1893 to $3.50 per ton in 1898 and to $1.38 per ton in 1913."
"In 1905, the Zinc Commission of the Government of Canada hired Philip Argall to investigate the zinc resources of British Columbia and test the ores to determine the best commercial process for beneficiation. Ores from the great Sullivan deposit were among those tested.
"In 1906-1907, Philip Argall designed the Golden Cycle Mill at Colorado Springs, Colorado, which remained the world's largest dry roasting cyanide mill. In 1907, Philip Argall started an investigation of flotation that continued until his death.
"Philip Argall was born at the Colig lead mine in County Down, Ireland. Prior to arriving in the United States in 1887, he worked at mines, mills and smelters in Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, New Zealand and Mexico.

"The cyanide process Philip Argall perfected and made profitable remains the dominant process for gold extraction more than 100 years after it first attracted his attention.

He is a famous Mining Engineer, born and brought up in Ireland. He was born at the Colig Lead Mine, in County Down, and was educated in Wicklow and Dublin. His mining education was self-taught. He is recorded as the Secretary of the Great Vor Mine (Cornwall) 1873-1875. He was the Chief Agent of the Duchy and Peru Mine (Cornwall) 1881-1883. However, an entry recording Companies operating the mines on the East and West banks of the Avoca River from 1700s to 1982 (Copyright c.1993 Alan M Thomas) records: "In 1872, the Williams Brothers of Perran ar Worthal, Cornwall renewed their lease of the Tigoney and Cronebane mines with Capt. George Oates as Manager. Their Head Office was moved to Perranarworthal.
In 1884 - Associated Irish Mine Company was dissolved and was taken over by Thomas Revington who renamed the company as the Cronebane Irish Mines under Captain James Higgins of Scorrier, Cornwall. Messrs. Argall and Davies purchased Cronbane Irish Mines to form "The Avoca Syndicate
".

Alan M Thomas address was given as: Vale Cottage, Woodenbridge, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Phone: 00353-402-35419. He also wrote that a Local Mining Engineer (a Mr Wynne) wrote:
"In 1878 Mr Philip Argall wrote a comprehensive report on the East Avoca mines (published by the Royal Dublic Society, Vo. 2 1879 entitled "On the ancient and recent mining operations in the East Avoca District". He (Philip Argall) "was at that time a young man under 30 and, as far as is known, all his mining experience had been gained at Avoca where he worked - latterly as Assistant Manager. "The fact that Mr Argall was convinced that there was plenty of mineable ore left in the mine is shown by his having come back from America (where he had made money in the smelting business in Colorado) in 1900 and formed the Avoca Syndicate under the management of Mr E H Davies - a well known London Consulting Engineer." "They did some reopening of the mines for a period of about two years and then sold their interests to a London Company." First worked in the Wicklow Copper Mines before moving to Swansea in 1879, thence to London and onto Cornwall. He was the Agent in Wicklow for the Sulphur and Copper ore Mines, and later Manager of the Stannic Chemical and Tin Extraction Works in Swansea. He was also the Manager of the Glenariff Iron Mine in Co. Antrim and the Manager of the Duchy Mining Company in St Newlyn East. He spent a year in London as manager of the Barking Metal Works. For the next 10 years he wandered into France, Spain, Italy, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and finally to the USA in 1887, where he eventually became an American citizen.

He had 6 sons and 5 daughters (one son died in Cornwall soon after birth). Emigrated to USA in 1887, and became a US citizen in 1889. One report states 10 children survived him. During his apprenticeship, he patented a handbrake for the Horse Whim, and won first prize for the best plan and section for any mining district at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society's exhibition for 1878. Next year he took a course in metallurgy in Swansea after which he was put in charge of the Stannic Smelting Works where tin was reduced in old-fashioned Cornish Furnaces. Together with John Uren for his refiner, he made a decisive improvement in reducing the ore. However, his health suffered from the Sulphate. He managed the Duchy Peru Mine near Newquay. After that there followed further mining experience in New Zealand, France and Mexico until he became manager of the La Plata at Leadville, Colorado, USA in 1887. He opened a consulting office in Denver. His first assignment was in 1893 to make the Deadwood cyanide plant in South Dakota work. He installed rolls to minimise the formation of dust which made leaching impossible. He set up separate sand and slime circuits to make the plant operate successfully. A Mr. Callow at that time found it necessary to seek employment elsewhere and worked as a draftsman at various places in Denver until 1894, when he became connected with Philip Argall in designing the works of the Metallic Extraction Company near Florence, Colorado. He was also at one time associated with Henry Vezin and says that he gained much valuable knowledge and experience from both Mr. Vezin and Mr. Argall. [Philip Argall managed the La Planta - not the smelter. The Smelter was a technical success, but it could not get enough feed so was forced to shut down. He did not invent the cyanide process to recover gold from ores, but he was one of the first to prove and use it on a commercial scale. (George Argall - grandson, wrote in July 2001).]

In 1915 he is shown 'as of Denver'. Philip made his reputation as a pioneer of the cyanide process in the reduction of Cripple Creek ores. "The treatment of the telluride gold ores of Cripple Creek gave him a congenial problem, which he attacked with all the intensity of the Celtic temperament, incidentally waging a technical war of considerable vigour with the advocates of bothe bromination and chlorination in Colorado." He devoted years to parient experimentation upon and improving the cyanide process. His efforts resulted at length in the erection of a cyanide mill at Florence, Colorado in 1895; later he designed a similar mill for the Great Independence Mine of which he became manager in 1906. His campaign was crowned with complete success. He was able to report that in the 20 years 1893 to 1913, he had seen the cost of treating Cripple Creek ores fall from $15 per ton to $1.38. "And then to prove his updatedness, Mr Argall became involved in the use of flotation, achieving a noteworthy technical success so quietly that .... this interview is the first publication of it." This was the latest "flotation-process" in the reduction of gold ores. In 1898, he published a book "Geology of Cripple Creek District". Phillip retired from active mines to Denver, where he formed a consulting partnership with 2 of his 5 sons. He had married the daughter of Captain George Oates "a Cornishman with a long ancestry of miners, to whom I am indebted for much of my early training in engineering ethics." One of the sons was a practicing mettalurgist; the other, general manager for one of Leadville mines. The firm were consulting engineers to Statton's Independence and other Mines. A third son, born at Roche, near St Austell, graduated from the University of Colorado to become an ear, nose and throat specialist in Denver, and to serve as a Surgeon in the United States Navy in the First World War. He considered that his introduction of the 8-hour working day in Colorado Mills in the Spring of 1899 at the Metallic Extraction Compamny was his greatest achievement. BRODIE MILL: This mill, under the direction of Philip Argall, pioneered the efficient use of cyanide for gold recovery in the district. Although chlorination was widely used in the district for many years after the failure of stamp mills, the cyanide recovery system was finally judged to be the most efficient for recovery from CRIPPLE CREEK gold ores. By 1911, all chlorination mills were gone. Argall went on to become one of the eminent metallurgists of his time. Phillip published a book entitled "WESTERN MILL & SMELTER METHODS OF ANALYSIS - A PRACTICAL LABORATORY HANDBOOK FOR THE ASSAYER AND CHEMIST. A copy is in the British Library. On 8 September 1996 (sic), the US National Mining Hall of Fame recognised Philip for induction into the Hall of Fame at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DEATH: "PHILLIP ARGALL DEAD AT 68. Mining Expert, World Authority on Metals Succumbs in Denver.

Denver, Col. March 19th. Phillip Argall, Mining Engineer and World Authority on Metallurgy, died here today after a short illness. He was the founder of the Argall basic treatment for ores and was widely known in this country and Europe as an expert on cyanidation. Mr Argall was 68 years old and the author of numerous scientific books and papers.
"

OBITUARY: MEMORIAL TO PHILIP ARGALL:

When earthly ties are severed, those who by their immediate relationship to a departed one are burdened with sorropw, must always find mingled with their sorrow a degree of comfort when the departed one has left an imprint of useful activities and no inconsiderable contribution to the progress of civilisation, while covering life's span. In the life work of Philip Argall such imprint was conspicuously manifested in the line of his profession.
Mr Argall's association with the Iron Silver Mining Company, as its consulting engineer, covered a period of many years. The service was distringuished with such satisfaction to the company that it became a privilege to be able to express to the members of his family the high regard in which he was held and the full confidence always reposed in him by reason of his marked ability and integrety.
On behalf and by direction of the stockholders of this Company, as expressed at their annual general meeting held March twenty-first, one thousand nine hundred and twenty-two, their sympathy is herby extended to Mr. George O. Argall, who is still associated with the Company, and to the other members of the family in their bereavement.

The 1841 Census has additional 5 children listed but none of those above. The youngest is aged 10 in 1841, which would make her 46 when the youngest was born - possible, I suppose!
