Petition of Thomas ARGALL, clerk to his Majesty's ropeyard at Woolwich, to the Lords of the Admiralty: State Papers Domestic: Charles I cccxxi 82. 22 May 1636. Petition of Thomas ARGALL, clerk to his Majesty's ropeyard at Woolwich, to Secretary Coke: "Petitioner has belonged to the Navy since 1588, and has been employed 13 years in making cordage. Since 24 June last, the East India Company have the King's ropeyard and employ their own ministers. Prays for a purser's place in one of his new ships."

State Papers Domestic: Charles I cccxxxvi 72. 30 Nov 1636. Francis Sheldon to Secretary Nicholas: "His Majesty having granted to the writer and his deputy, for life, the clerkship of the prick and check of his Navy and workd at Woolwich, and the grant extending to the ropeyard and dockyard, about 12 months since he made known his interest therin to the officers of the Navy, who have since recognised his grant in all transactions, and desired that Mr Argall, formerly employed in the oversight of the works in the ropeyard, might continued, to which the writer condescended. But Argall having now a long time been confined to his chamber by a megrim in the head, and the writer fearing that if he be suddenly taken away, and the writer's interest in the place be unknown, the Lords may be moved to confer the same upon some other, he entreats Nicholas to make known the nature of his grant, so as to prevent any act to his prejudice."

SA Popular Wedding. ARGALL-FORBES.
A very pretty wedding and one in which much local interest was evinced was celebrated in the local Presbyterian Church on Wednesday last. The contracting parties were Miss Grace Forbes, youngest daughter of Mr C. and the late Christina Forbes, and Mr T. Argall, fourth son of the late Mr James Argall of Avoca. The bride was one of the most popular young ladies of Yea, and in consequence of this fact the Church was uncomfortably crowded, while many had to content themselves with a brief glance at the pretty bride from the roadway. The Church was prettily decorated for the auspicious occasion, this task being carried out by members of the congre- gation of the Church of which the bride was an earnest and devout member and worker. The impressive ceremony was conducted by the Rev. Campbell Lahore. assisted by the Rev. W. Batt. The b:ide, who was given away by her brother, Mr G. Forbes. was charminigly attired in a pretty creme marquiset'e high waisted frock, the bodice being maygar style, draped with rich silk and embroidered net, and finished with pearl and silver ma- tives and orange blossom. She wore a tunic skirt trimmed with motives to correspond with bodice which was finished with long square train, embroidered with silver true lovers' knots and orange blossom. She also wore the usual wreath and veil and carried a large shower bouquet. The bride. was attended by Miss Wolfe, niece of bridegroom, and Miss Clem Drysdale cousin of bride, who wore dainty creme silk crepe frocks, mayger bodice, inlet with insertion, over bodice of piece lace; high waisted tunic ; skirt trimmed with insertion, caught at waist with cord and sash ends. Two little dots - Cris. Thompson and Jean Cox -- dressed in white silk, acted as train bearers. The bride- groom was supported by Mr J. Cliff, and Mr Fraser K. Forbes occupied the position of groomsman. The Breakfast was held in the Shire hall, which was tastefully decorated. The relatives and a few-of the intimate friends of the intimate friends of the bride and bridegroom were present to the number of 120. The Rev. W.Campbell Lahore proposed the health of the Bride and Bridegroom. He regarded Mr Argall as fortunate in obtaining so admirable a wife. He knew a good deal of her and her work in connection with the church. She was an estimable young woman and was loved by all. ([Hear. hear.). She had stuck by her brothers, who were fortunate indeed in having one such as her to remain unmarried for so long a period to tend their wants. But for that she might have gone off a good while ago. (Laughter and applause). He knew little of the bridegroom, but he impressed him as being the right sort of person to establish happiness in the home. (hear hear). The bridegroom had arrived in Yea on the same evening that he (Mr Lahore) arrived, he stayed at the same house, and in a quiet, unpretentious way, the bridegroom's affection appeared to develop for the young lady in whose home they stayed. There was little outward display to mark the love making; still it was going on all the time! (Laughter). The upshot had been that he had been brought all the way from Rochester to unite the pair, whom he now wished all health, success and prospority. Mr Lahore added that he had married altogether about 150 couples, and this one promised to turn out the happiest of them all. (Laughter and applause). He was pleased to be back among them and to see so many of his former church men and women enjoying the best of health. None of them seemed to have grown a day older, and he had none but the kindliest feelings for everyone present. (Applause). The Rev. W. Bett supported the toast. He was conscious of the bride's good qualities, more particularly owing to her labors on behalf of church work and the annual shows. He wished Mr and Mrs Argall long life and happiness and hoped "their joys would be as big as the ocean and their sorrows as light as the foam." (Applause). The toast was honored with enthusiasm. Mr Argall, who was applauded, expressed thankfulness for the manner in which the toast had been proposed and received, and for the collection of beautiful presents given his wife and himself. These exceeded all his expectations, and made him feel deeply grateful. He also felt indebted to Mrs Oliver and Mrs E. K Smith, aunts of his wife, particularly for their kindly forethought in providing the breakfast, which must have involved considerable pains. It was in every sense lovely. He had waited a long while for his wife, but she was worth waiting for. (Hear, hear). H proposed the toast of the Bridesmaids. Mr J. Cliff aeknowledge the toast. Mr J. C. Sanders J.P., proposed the health of Mrs Oliver and Mrs Smitlh. lte paid a tribute to the delightful spread whlich had been prepared by them, and said that it must have meant a great amount of work on their part. lndeed the gathering offered every inducement to those single persons to emulate Mr and Mrs Argall. If he had his way, he would tax bachelors, and even young women, who refused to marry. This was leap year, and any persons who declined two offers should be taxed. (Laughter), Mr James Oliver responded to the so toast, and the company joined in singing AuldLang Syne. Ringing cheers were given for the bride and bride- groom who afterwards--left for Melbourne by the evening train. The honeymoon will be spent at the Blue Mouutains and in Tasmantia.
In the evening a social-gathering took place in the Hall, where the guests were received by mesdames Oliver and Smith (aunts of the bride). Dancing was indulged in till 3 o'clock this morning. The dance music was supplied by Mr Boyd. During the evening vocal numbers were given by Miss Ottery, Messrs Carthlew Waddell, A. Dunn, and G. Mcleish. A recitation was also given by Miss Redmond in splendid style.

OCCUPATION: Lawyer (Notary Public) and Merchant in the City of London, and Registrar of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.

GENERAL NOTES: BIRTH: He was born at Lambeth where his parents held a house and a close on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate. He was probably born in his parents house on this estate at Lambeth in 1500 (In a legal document dated July 1540, Thomas was recorded as forty years old (PRO SP 1/162)).

He seemed to have lived in London mainly and is recorded as acquiring much property during his lifetime. He bought the estate at East Sutton in Kent in 1546 from Richard Covert, and was granted (acquired) the Manor of Walthamstow Bedyk (known as Low Hall), Essex, in 1553, and was an officer of the Royal Court in 1559.

In a book published by the London Record Society 'Bedes Fraternity of St Nicholas' it mentions Thomas Argall joining in London in the year 1520.
Didn't have a long look at the book, but will return to it, but many interesting names mentioned. What was this fraternity about, i suppose it operated just like one of the many Guilds, BUT perhaps on a different level of society.

He began his legal career around 1521 when he entered the services of Archbishop Wareham (Lived 1450 - 1532; Archbishop of Canterbury 1503 to 1532) at Lambeth. He proved many Wills, including that of James Gosnolde of Edwardston Halle, co. Suffolk, dated 29 January 1522. Proved 6 March 1522 [3] by Thomas Argall, proctor for the executors named.

He is first mentioned in Court records on 23 May 1529 in correspondence between the Bishop of Norwich and Cardinal Wolsey. He was later Secretary (Scryvenor/Clerk) to Thomas Cromwell, who in turn was Secretary to Cardinal Wolsey, Chancellor of all England; Thomas Cromwell later succeeded Wolsey as Chancellor.

Thomas Argall played an important part in the legal proceedings surrounding the annulment of the marriages of King Henry VIII. He is recorded as party to the annulment of the marriage to Anne of Cleeves, and to Katherine. He is mentioned in the Court papers starting in June 1533. He is also discussed in the LETTERS AND PAPERS FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC Vol. XVIII, Part I as purchasing The Rectory of CREWENNE (Crowan), in Cornwall on 29 October 1543, although the purchase was never sealed (Page 555, 38b BOOKS OF THE COURT OF AUGMENTATION).

Thomas received a Royal Pardon (what for?) on 22 January 1549. Thomas, together with his father-in-law, John Tallakarne, had custody of Halden Wood and of land in Rolvynden (Kent?) on 23 May 1554. Thomas was appointed Keeper of the records of the Court of First Fruits and Tenths on 10 March 1542 and was appointed Registrar of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in February 1554. He was instrumental in reestablishing the Guild of Jesus within St Paul's Cathedral during the Marian Counter-reformation.

Thomas Argall, bore for his arms, Party per fess, argent and vert, a pale counterchanged; three lions heads erased gules. He procured his lands in this county to be disgavelled by the act of the 2d and 3d of Edward VI. and died possessed of it in the 6th year of that reign.

His son and heir, Richard Argall, esq. had by Mary his wife, daughter of Sir Reginald Scott, of Scots-hall, a son John, and two daughters, Catherine, wife of Ralph Bathurst, esq. of Horton Kirkby, and Elizabeth, of Sir Edward Filmer, of Little Charleton, in this parish,

The manor of GREAT HORWOOD, which had been held by Alward Cilt, a thegn of King Edward, was assessed in 1086 at 10 hides among the lands of Walter Giffard. (fn. 4) The manor, as that of Great Missenden (q.v.), was afterwards parcel of that part of the honour of Giffard (fn. 5) which descended in the earldoms of Gloucester and Stafford. (fn. 6) This overlordship is mentioned last in 1402, (fn. 7) and after the grant to New College, Oxford, in 1441 the manor was held in free alms. In 1557 the reversion was granted by Queen Mary to Thomas Argall. (fn. 29). Upon his death his lands here passed to his widow Margaret, who afterwards married Sir Giles Allington, with reversion to his sons. (fn. 30).

On 23 February 1560, he licenced various Manors in Sussex and Surrey to Sir Richard Sackvill, who likewise licenced the Manors of TOLLEPYDDELL in Dorset and Wydcombe to Thomas's sons Gabriel and Edmund (Edward), and the Manors of Byrncombe and Woodbourne to his sons John and Rowland.

ARGALL AVENUE in Walthamstow now commemorates the Argall connection. On 17 August 1547 an Inquisition was taken at The Guildhall (17 Aug ,1 Edward VI) before Henry Hoberthorne, Knight, Mayor and Escheator, after the death of John Potkyn gentleman, by oath..... wh sayeth that: John Potkyn was seised of 1 capital messuage called the Sterre situated in ....Bredestrete (there follows a statement of the property and its income). So seised, the said John Potkyn made his Will 8 April 1843 and thereby bequeathed all the said premises to John Baker, knight, Thomas Smyth, Richard Randall, THOMAS ARGALL, Edmund Jenny, gentlemen.... to hold to them and their heirs for ever........ In 1560, he bought Walthamstow Bedyke from Ralph Sadler.
His own Will reveals other property in Ludgate (London), Essex, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Southants (sic), Bedfordshire and Kent. In the Harlean Record of PCC Wills, he is described of "St Michaells in the Querne, St Faythes, St Martins within Ludgate, London". He is believed to be buried in the Church of St Faith in the Virgin, Bermondsey. His burial date is assumed as 2 days after his death. The Appendix to the 9th Report on the Manuscripts of the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's (A Box 9) refers to the demise by St Paul's to Thomas of their "great messuage in Ivy Lane", which is where he had house in the shadow of St Paul's, and where he almost certainly died. Thomas was married twice, and Margaret Tallakarne was his second wife. Date of birth taken from article by James Alsop in the Catholic Recusant. Date of death taken from from PRO List of PCC Will information. He was granted the right to use the ARGALL Coat of Arms in about 1554. His son Richard succeeded to the property of East Sutton in 1563.

I have "The London Encyclopaedia" which gives information on this parish and church. The church was demolished in 1256 when old St Paul's was extended eastwards, which served the people of Paternoster Row and St Paul's Churchyard. The parishioners were then given space for their church in the crypt of St Paul's Cathdral. The location is marked within the present Cathedral. But when the cathedral was rebuilt after the Great Fire, the parish of St Faith's was combined with St Augustine to become St Augustine with St Faith, Watling Street, in a church rebuilt in 1680-83 by Wren. This church was bombed in 1940 and only the tower and spire remained. It is now incorporated into St Paul's choir school.

On a map of the parishes of the City of London, St Faith's under St Paul's is shown just North of St Paul's Cathedral, but south of Newgate Street, continuing on round the East end of St Paul's - but I think all to the West of the present line of New Change.

Notes
General:
OCCUPATION: Telegrapher.

CENSUS INFORMATION: In the 1870 US Census, he is listed as Thomas Argall aged 6, born in Pennsylvania and living in the West Ward of Mahoney City, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania with his parents, a brother and a sister. (Mahoney West Ward, 549, Page 15).
In the 1880 US Census, he is listed as Thomas ARGALL, a Telegraphing Apprentice aged 15 born in Pennsylvania. He is living with his parents, 3 sisters and a brother in Pottsville, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania. (Supervisors District 3008, Enumeration District 225, Page 26).

GENERAL NOTES: Thomas had a rough life. He started working in a mine at the age of 12 or 13. One day he went to transfer a belt to a different pulley and the belt caught his leg and severely injured it. His leg had to be amputated on his mother's kitchen table. Sometime after that, he had the opportunity to become a telegrapher on the railroad, which suited him well since he could perform most of his duties whilst sitting. Unfortunately, one of his duties was, periodically, to hand the locomotive engineer a dispatch as the train sped by. The story goes that, on one occasion, as he reached out with the dispatch pole, he lost his balance and fell into the moving train, killing him instantly. His parents were heartbroken and had his headstone made, which includede the telegrapher's key as well as a baby lamb. He was only 18. (Input from a correspondent prior to 2013).

DEATH: Died as a result of a railroad accident.

BURIAL: Thomas Argall is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Pottsville, PA. The stone is somewhat weathered but reads" THOMAS ARGALL DIED SEPT. 24 1882 AGED 18 YRS, 3 MONTHS 5 DAYS". Birth date is calculated from age on gravestone. No one has to tell me that he was a telegrapher because carved into a recess in the column is a telegrapher's key and receiver over which you can still decipher the words "In Life". Either the Cemetery officials or the family recognized the uniqueness of this gravestone because they did attempt to cover it with plexiglass as long as 40 years ago (i.e. about 1971). Unfortunately, half of this has now gone.

Notes
General:
GENERAL NOTES: Thomas may have been a son of Anthony Argall and possibly Catherine Chapman. Anthony was at Rayleigh and had at least one daughter buried there, Elizabeth. She was buried in June 1653. Prior to that he was at Rettendon, he was listed as being in a dispute in the Quarter Session Records in the year 1646.
Anthony was a name used by the Argall family in Rayleigh for at least two generations, as was the name Charles.

Thomas must have been at Rayleigh from at least 1672 as he was mentioned in the Hearth Tax returns for that year, and paid tax for 5 hearths - which must have been a considerable size of house.
