The name "M.W. Argall" was engraved on a stone step at the Masonic Cemetery almost one hundred years ago upon his passing in the Summer of 1913. There may have been a marker, but none now exists. Thanks to the miracle of information-sharing on the internet, a gentleman "across the pond" in Cornwall, England, sent some information about "M.W. Argall" and we now have a lovely portrait of one of Grass Valley's early pioneers who hailed from Cornwall, England. His name was Matthew Wilkin Argall; he was born 28 May 1847 in St Newlyn East, Cornwall, England, and was baptised there on 18 November 1847. He emigrated to America as a young man and just weeks before his 25th birthday, he married Elizabeth James Cocking in Dover, Morris county, New Jersey, USA on 5 April 1872; the following year, the young couple moved to Grass Valley where they remained for the next forty years until his passing on August 10, 1913. Matthew, as was noted in his lengthy obit below, "had rare accomplishments, being the master of nearly every instrument known to the musical profession." He was among the first in the West to practice the custom of singing carols during the Christmas season, and composed some of the carols sung by his church choir. Many of the "Cornish Christmas" traditions are still celebrated in Grass Valley, including the singing of carols in the town. Many thanks to Matthew Wilkin Argall for his contributions to keeping the Cornish musical traditions alive in that little town in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

MICHAEL HOLLAND ARGALL, 49, of Colorado died from a rare form of leukemia May 22. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St. Mr. Argall was born in Lakewood. He was a career prosecutor serving Canon City, Durango, Salida and Montrose, and he trained many young prosecutors. He played a key role in many high-profile cases and served on numerous community agency boards. Survivors, all of Denver, include wife Patricia; mother Bernadine; brother Patrick; son Jefferson. He had been ill since late August but it wasn't until April 1 that we had a definite diagnosis. The doctors knew that he had a very compromised immune system but they couldn't explain why. He had been hospitalized 3 times including a month long stay in the Mayo Clinicin Scottsdale, Arizona. Every test was run and rerun and still no answers. At the end of March we saw a new hemotologist Dr. Jeff Matus. Dr. Matus was aware of a very rare form of leukemia being researched by Dr.Thomas Loughran at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa. In a desperate attempt to find the answer to this mystery we went to Tampa. There we found that answer. Michael had Natural Killer Cell Disease. This is an autoimmune type disease where the cells which normally attack viruses were attacking every cell in his body. The good news was that there was a treatment that offered hope. We returned to Denver and began chemo. It looked good. The first two blood tests were significantly better than they had been in months. Then things started to go sour. Michael was growing weaker by the day. On May 8, 1998 I had to put Michael back in the hospital. Two hours after being admitted Michael suffered multiple organ failure. The doctors were able to start his heart again and he was placed on a respirator. For the next two weeks Michael lay motionless and silent in ICU.Those were the most difficult days of my life. I watched and prayed as the doctors tried to restore his life. Finally, I was forced to see that he was already gone. Michael never wanted to be kept "alive" by machines. On May 22 I released my angel. He was surrounded by his family as he slipped off to heaven. I met Michael on May 15, 1982 while working a political campaign. Even though we lived in different cities, we found lots of ways to be in the same place at the same time. Our love grew.It soon became obvious to both of us that we would spend the rest of our lives together. Little did I know how short that time would be. .Michael and I were married on November 6, 1993 at Montview Presbyteian Church in Denver, Colorado. Our wedding was truly a celebration of love. We were surrounded by many friends and family. Our four and half year marriage was a great adventure. We spent all of our anniversaries in Estes Park,Co. It was a way for us to spend some quiet time away from the ringing phones, traffic and demands of everyday life. We also enjoyed celebrating holidays with family. Christmas was spent with my parents and grandmother in Cheyenne Michael enjoyed cooking especially for lots of friends and family. His specialties included the hottest chili you will ever taste, turkey and dressing, white chocolate lasagna and cheesecake Every fall Michael and his lifelong friend would spend hours canning homemade chutney using green tomatoes from Don's garden and nearly every kind of fruit imaginable from apples to peaches to pears to mangos .Michael was educated in parochial schools. He attended St. Bernadettes School from 1st - 8th grades. In 1962 he entered the prestigious Jesuit High school, Regis. It was while studying at Regis that he decided to commit his professional life to the law. Following high school graduation Michael entered Regis University Upon completing his undergraduate work, Michael. He began his legal career with several lawyers in private practice in Denver. He soon became aware that what he really wanted to do was prosecute. This search took him to Canon City , Co. In 1975 Michael became a deputy district attorney and his career in prosecution began. For the next 23 years he served the communities of Trinidad, Durango, Salida and Montrose Colorado. The law enforcement community respected his knowledge of the law and his skills in the courtroom .Throughout his career he played key roles in many high profile cases including convicting a man for a murder committed 23 years earlier. Michael's top priorities were keeping drunk drivers off the streets and protecting victims of domestic and child abuse. He liked to say it "was a good day. several bad guys went to jail". He also trained many young prosecutors. Michael Stern former 7th Judicial District Attorney and currently with the Attorney General's office in Guam was trained by Michael. Stern called him " one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the area of criminal law in the entire state. Wyatt Angelo remarked that Michael had the ability to recall details from obscure cases " The stuff most people would have to look up he would have stored away i a cuby hole in the back of his mind." Don Eberle a life long friend and former state legislator stated " Mike possessed one of the finest, natural legal minds that I know and he will be missed by those who work in law enforcement." Upon learning of Michael's death a fellow prosecutor lamented " this is the end of an era".

Deputy DA loses battle with leukemia By Scott Schwebke / Montrose Daily Press / May 28, 1998 MONTROSE - A memorial service will be held Friday in Denver for Assistant District Attorney Michael H. Argall, who died last week following a battle with leukemia. Argall, 49, died Friday at Rose Medical Center in Denver, apparently from complications from chemotherapy treatment, said Seventh Judicial District Attorney Wyatt Angelo. Argall was an assistant DA with the Seventh Judicial District. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, a son, Jefferson, his mother, Bernadine Argall, and a brother, Patrick Argall, all of Denver. Argall had been ill since August but was only diagnosed with leukemia about 2 1/2 months ago. "He tried to come back to work in March, but God bless him, he couldn't do it," Angelo said.

A memorial service to honor Argall will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St., Denver. A reception to celebrate Argall's life will be held June 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Montrose Elks Lodge, 801 South Hillcrest. Argall was a native of Lakewood and a graduate of Regis College. He received his law degree from the University of Denver. He was a member of numerous community organizations, including the Mexican American Development Association Board of Directors in Montrose. He was a prosecutor for nearly 25 years and joined the Seventh Judicial District in 1991. His primary responsibilities in the district included prosecuting cases in Montrose County Court and Ouray County District Court, Angelo said. Argall also had been a prosecutor for the sixth and 12th judicial districts. He will be remembered by colleagues for his "legal acumen" and his ability to recall details from obscure cases, said Angelo. "The stuff most people would have to look up he would have stored away in a cubby hole in the back of his mind," Angelo said. Charles Sellers, an investigator for the Montrose County Child Support Enforcement Office, recalled his friendship with Argall. During his previous job as a Montrose Police Department detective, Sellers frequently consulted with Argall. "He had an excellent legal mind," Sellers recalled. "I called him whenever I needed to be sure on any legal issue." Sellers said Argall also loved the outdoors. The pair frequently fished together at Lake Powell in Utah and Navajo Reservoir near Durango. "He was a hell of bass fisherman," Sellers said of Argall. Don Eberle, a life-long friend and a former state legislator, said Argall was a great help to area law enforcement officers.
