GENERAL NOTES: Origins of Weymouth clan.

At this moment in time Valentine is the earliest Weymouth we have been able to trace back to in West Penwith, that far south western tip of Cornwall, that juts into the Atlantic, ending with Land's End. Only the Scilly Isles lie any further west. There are traces of the family appearing in various older records, but as yet no way of joining them into a linked sequence. Interestingly there only appears the one thread forward in time in that area. No others in neighbouring villages with the name. This suggests that Valentine was the first in the area.

We have no birth date for Valentine obviously, since he is the first. The "First Book of Madron" gives a burial date for "Valentyn Weymuowthe". A search of the Cornish Muster Rolls of 1569 shows a Valentine Wenmouth living in Withiel in the hundred of Pydar. (Probably modern Lostwithiel.) Could well be this man. He is listed as an Archer, with own bow, arrows & sheaf, and a horse rider. If he is the same man, and I've not found any other traces of the name, then Valentine seems to have been moving westward. Curiously, when Valentine was living in Madron, a neighbouring family was the Argalls, and one of Valentines daughters married an Argall. While trying to trace Valentine's trace I noticed that at one point in time he was literally within a stone's throw of Argall Manor, the origin of the Argall family, near Falmouth. Could it be he accompanied an Argall further westward, and that acquaintance led to the marital joining of the families? Seems very possible.

An authors note on the spelling of Weymouth in the first Book of Madron goes:- "" Weymuowtiie", certainly intended for "Weymouth"; but it is almost impossible to be exact in representing such a word as this, for the strokes of m, n, and u being all alike, and without any division between the letters, it might be read in several ways. Perhaps the design was to have written Weymmoivthe, but one of the strokes of the double letter was omitted." This presumably refers to the task before scribes of Latinising Cornish names.

Early spellings, taken from the "First Book of Madron" lists George as Weymond and Weymoth, and Sybill as a Wemuoth's widow, so spelling certainly varied. For the record "West Penwith Records" has 52 varied spellings of Weymouth / Wenmoth etc in the Census alone.
