Notes
General:
OCCUPATION: Barrister of Gray's Inn 1582; Bencher 1599.

GENERAL NOTES: His father sent him to Oxford University at the age of 14 with a scholarship, presumably to qualify for a career in the Church. The parishioners did not suffer, since there was no church, village or duties attached to the living. But after seven years the young rector had progressed no further than his first degree, and in 1572 he was specially entered at the inns of court. Here too his progress was slow; but he had the acumen to seize on the opportunities for 'extortion' provided by the post of registrar in Chancery. His first wife came from a similarly upwardly mobile family, his second connected him with the Scotts of Scots Hall, one of the most powerful families in Kent. From 1602 he leased a house from Maidstone's corporation in Knightrider Street, and around the same time he purchased Jordan's Hall, in Stone Street. It is unclear which of these properties served as his address.

By 1604 Washington's elder brother was in serious financial difficulties, and the brief career of the family among the Northamptonshire gentry was almost over. Washington himself, on the other hand, had become a magistrate in his adopted county, and was elected junior burgess for Maidstone on 9 Mar., either on his own interest or that of his wife's nephew, Sir John Scott*. A few weeks later he obtained the reversion of his office for his son, Laurence. He was appointed to only two parliamentary committees. The first, on 5 July 1604, concerned a bill to confirm letters patent, in which he had a personal stake, and the second, on 13 Mar. 1610, dealt with a measure to regulate the fees charged for legal copies and reflected his professional interests. At the next general election the seat at Maidstone was required for Scott himself. Washington's nephew sold the rectory of Stotesbury in 1615, and he was formally deprived of the living three years later, after nearly 60 years as sinecure incumbent without ever taking orders. He drew up his will on 8 Aug. 1619, in which he declared himself to be a member of the elect. Aged 73, he died on 21 Dec. in his house in Chancery Lane, and was buried in the church of All Saints, Maidstone. A memorial erected by his son recalled his 27 years as registrar but not his parliamentary service. His son, knighted in 1627, removed to Wiltshire, and his grandson, also Laurence, served in the Cavalier army and sat for Malmesbury after the Restoration.

For 27 years he was the Registrar of the High Court of Chancery, and M.P. for Maidstone, Kent 1604-11. One reference suggests he died in Chancery Lane, London. He was the Great Uncle of the Rev. Laurence Washington, whose son, John, was an emigrant ancestor of George Washington, the first President of the USA. William was decended from Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester 1243 to 1295 and Joan of Acre 1272 to 1307. Lawrence's Great Grandfather was John Washington who married Margaret, daughter of Robert Kytson of Warton, Lancashire.

The ancestral home of the Washington family is Sulgrave Manor, near Banbury.

General notes show he had issue. A daughter Martha [or properly ? Margaret] Washington ob. 1679 married 1630 to Sir John Tyrell MP for Maldon bc1593 ob 1676 as his 2nd wife (first was Elizabeth Evelyn [a relative of John Evelyn, diarist] by whom he had a daughter Elizabeth Tyrell b.1629 & married William Foster d.1660, son of Sir Humphrey Foster c1595/1663 of Aldermarston and wife Anne Kingsmill d.12.10.1673 daughter of William of Sidmonton, Hants). By Sir John, they had children of Lawrence b1632 ob 1652, Thomas bc 1640 ob.1679 Charles ob.1670, Martha - who married Benjamin Ayloffe Bt and had issue. John and Martha's second son was John b.1635 ob.1673 who became 1st Bt of Springfield Barney, Essex, who also had issue. Basic details taken from the book ''The Tyrells of England'' by O.F. Brown [PHILIMORE 1982], with some revision/additions, from personal research.

Notes
General:
GENERAL INFORMATION: He was the son of John Washington (b. 1478, d. 1520) and Margaret Kytson of Warton Hall. Lawrence married Anne Aimee Pargiter (b. 1504, d. 07 Oct 1564) in 1538 in Sulgrave, England. Anne was the daughter of Robert Pargiter and Anne Knight and the widow of Thomson of Greatworth.

Lawrence Washington was a wealthy wool merchant and became Mayor of Northampton. It was Lawrence who first settled at Sulgrave with his second wife Aimee, the third daughter of Robert Pargiter of Greatworth, near Sulgrave. Lawrence's former wife, Elizabeth, had died childless. Lawrence purchased Sulgrave from King Henry VIII in 1539.

He was a Justice of the Peace and Baliff of Warton, Lancashire. He was Mayor of Northampton in 1532 and 1545. Lawrence (c 1500- 1584) received Sulgrave Manor by grant from King Henry VIII on 10 March 1549, the property having formerly belonged to the Priory of St Andrew in Northamptonshire. He built the new Sulgrave Manor buildings, Northamptonshire.

He had 11 children; his eldest son Robert (#15); and Robert's son, the said Lawrence, (#17); setting precedents which many of the family followed! The Lawrence married to Mary Scott Argall is a son, probably the second, of the builder and, in pursuit of no other gremlins emerging, extremely unlikely to have been born in Kent as the (#27) entry suggests - almost certainly here at Sulgrave or possibly in Northampton, where his father also had house/business. Unfortunately no parish records at all (burnt in the 18th century) and no one, as far as I know, has looked at the Bishops' Transcripts so we have no details of baptism date/location. This Lawrence, distinguished from the others by his later Kent location and Chancery job, is not in the direct George line so has been less researched but a portrait exists of his son, Sir Lawrence who was also Registrar and ended up at Gardon in Wiltshire, owning Stone Henge for a while!

Lawrence Washington, of Gray's Inn, lived in or near Northampton before his removal to Sulgrave, and besides being a successful wool merchant, was evidently a man of some importance in the community, as he was twice Mayor of the town and one of the original trustees of the Free Grammar School.

FAMILY HISTORY: The Washingtons took their name from Washington, in county Durham, where they originated.12 Washington's father migrated from Lancashire to Northampton in about 1530, set up as a wool-stapler and served as mayor. On the dissolution of the monasteries he moved up into the county gentry by acquiring the manor of St. Andrew's in Sulgrave and the rectory of Stotesbury.13 Taking advantage of the confusion following the collapse of the Marian reaction, he flouted Canon Law by presenting the young Washington to the living at the age of 13, and sent him to Oxford with a scholarship in the following year, presumably to qualify for a career in the Church. The parishioners did not suffer, since there was no church, village or duties attached to the living. But after seven years the young rector had progressed no further than his first degree, and in 1572 he was specially entered at the inns of court. Here too his progress was slow; but he had the acumen to seize on the opportunities for 'extortion' provided by the post of registrar in Chancery.14 His first wife came from a similarly upwardly mobile family, his second connected him with the Scotts of Scots Hall, one of the most powerful families in Kent. From 1602 he leased a house from Maidstone's corporation in Knightrider Street, and around the same time he purchased Jordan's Hall, in Stone Street. Notes
General:
GENERAL NOTES: Was the eldest son. Lawrence married Margaret, daughter of William Butler and Margaret; the Lawrence who married Margaret Butler was this Lawrence's nephew, son of his brother Robert.
It was not from Lawrence Washington's eldest son, Sir Lawrence that our Virginians were descended, but from his second son, Robert. Robert Washington and his wife lived at Sulgrave until 1610, when he and his son, Lawrence, sold the Manor to Lawrence Makepeace Esq., of Lincoln's Inn. Although Robert Washington did not own Sulgrave Manor after 1610, he desired that his body should be buried there where his father was buried, in front of his pew in church, under the same stone. Lawrence Washington, son of Robert, died before his father and was buried at Brington in 1616. His son, the Reverend Lawrence, of Purleigh, born in 1602, was the father of the John Washington who came to Virginia about 1657.
Children: Walter Washington and Lawrence Washington.
