James TINNY and Jane JACKA were married on 3 Feb 1810 in Colan, Cornwall. Marriage was by banns. He is described as a yeoman of St Columb Minor; she as of this parish. Witnesses were Elizabeth Jacka and Philip James Jacka. All signed (James as Tinney, although shown as Tinny above!). For further links with Jane's family, see her father's page.

He was living in Perranzabuloe in 1840. He was a witness to Samuel Benny's Will in May 1840. He stated when giving an affidavit after Samuel's death a month later that he was 'of Perranzabuloe'. However, he was back in Mawgan at the time of the 1841 census. (Might he have been visiting a relative in Perranzabuloe? - there was a Joseph Tinney, aged 45, there in 1841, and many Jackas - n.b. wife's believed birthplace). He lived as a Agricultural labourer in Lower Treskeys, Mawgan in Pydar in 1841. Caroline and Jane are with him in 1841. Age is given as 60(-65).

This entry also appears in the St Columb Minor census, so it was probably close to the boundary of the two parishes (and therefore probably now part of St Mawgan airfield!). See also his father's Will.

DEATH: He died Apoplexy, at 5 a.m. on 26 Nov 1843 in St Columb Minor, Cornwall. Death Certificate describes him as a labourer aged 64. Informant was 'David Tinney, nephew, present at the death'. (This David was christened at St Columb Minor in 1821, and is the son of James' brother Richard and his wife Ann Jacka).

At Truro Quarter Sessions in 1794, there is a discharge of a recognizance given by William Tinney sen. and John Stephens, both of St Columb Minor, for William Tinney jun. to abide by a bastardy order. (This appears to relate to the father and brother of the James Tinney christened in 1776).

Children: James, Caroline and Elias are shown in IGI as born at St Columb Minor. Daughter Jane appears in the 1841 census with him. (This address may appear in census under St Columb Minor also). Caroline is also with him then, but may have died in 1843.

DEATH: Death is recorded in the GRO indexes for the St Columb Registration District in the December quarter of 1843 under reference 9.38. He is listed as James Tinney.

BURIAL: Burial is recorded in St Columb Minor parish registers under Entry #646:

(From John James). John Argall's wife Jane Ann Tinney was said to have refused to go out again after losing her son but I remember her well. She died in August 1945, and her only nephew was killed in Normandy in 1944, so she had nothing but cousins after that which included my own grandmother so that is how I knew them. There is a picture of John Argall in the book 'St Columb Minor Memories and Parish History' which I was involved in.

After her husband's death, she lived with her brother, David, at 105 Church Street, St Columb Minor.

DEATH: Death is recorded in GRO indexes for the St Columb Registration District, under reference 5c 91 for September quarter of 1945. Age recorded as 83.

Abode at time of death was 105 Church Street, St Columb Minor. Her place of death is Newquay.

BURIAL: Buried in consecrated ground on 31 August 1945 in Grave 520. She is recorded as Jane Ann Argall aged 83. Her burial is recorded in St Columb Grave Register (Page 65, Grave No. 469); Age at burial is 83. Burial is also recorded in the St Columb Minor Burial Book as Entry 741.

GENERAL NOTES: Probable son of John and Dorothy.

BIRTH: John TINNY was born about 1720. There are possible (extracted) christenings in the IGI in 1720 at St Columb Major in 1708, St Wenn in 1711, and Mawgan in Pydar in 1712, but the most likely one is possibly at St Wenn in 1720, because mother's name Dorothy corresponds with his first child.
