BIRTH: John TINNY was born about 1720. There are possible (extracted) christenings in the IGI in 1720 at St Columb Major in 1708, St Wenn in 1711, and Mawgan in Pydar in 1712, but the most likely one is possibly at St Wenn in 1720, because mother's name Dorothy corresponds with his first child.

Children are shown in the parish register, and all are christened at St Columb Minor.
Son, John, appears to have died at St Columb Minor in 1795 (possibly with two children - there are a Richard and Grace mentioned on the headstone, with no age). A similar fate appears to have befallen his cousin Richard, the son of William, in 1798.

Note - the 1841 census shows James Tinney at Lower Treskeys (both in St Columb Minor and Mawgan in Pydar), with two of his later children. Richard and John Tinney are farming Tregenna (now close to the A3059), with Richard and James Jacka also there. John Trebilcock (the son of the John who probably witnessed this Will) is now farming Hendra with his wife Fanny, who later took her family to Australia.

Following his marriage in Moonta, South Australia, in 1866, he then travelled to Sydney from Melbourne as a steerage passenger on the ship Balclutha with his new bride Catherine on 2 Mar 1866.

The thing that makes David unique is that he devoted his life to mining and exploration. His career in Australia, followed the development of Australian mining. Starting at the Cornish community of Moonta in South Australia in the mid 1860's, he followed the new mining fields as they developed. His travels culminated in the goldfields at Kalgoorlie at the turn of the century.

David's travels moved in a counter clockwise direction around the continent over 30 years. He worked in mines as a mine captain, or went exploring and mining for himself as he wanted.

After leaving Moonta, some years were spent in Sunny Corner near Bathurst, where he raised a family. His wife moved back to Sydney, as she did not like the rural life in mining communities. David purchased a house for her in Sydney, provided funds and continued to follow the mining rushes. He sent money home regularly to keep the family.

David continued his travels to the top of Queensland, then headed west through the Northern Territory and over to North West Western Australia. He spent time mining in the Broome area in the North West of West Australia and travelled to Perth where he made a base.

Amelia Victoria Tippet (his Daughter) was a Nurse in Sydney. David paid for her and her husband Charles Smith, to travel by steamer to Perth. He purchased a house for them at Greenmount in the outer suburbs. I believe this was to give himself some security for his old age as he had separated from his wife Catherine. She found another man in Sydney due to lack of contact with David. He was becoming less able to deal with the rigours of prospecting and mining.

When Paddy Hannan found Gold at Coolgardie, David joined the rush again at 60 years of age and ended up with a mine (Last Chance) at Kanowna. This town is located some 50 km's North East of Kalgoorlie. There was only minimal water available in the area and that was salty from the salt lake nearby. The miners poled together to buy an evaporator to obtain water for drinking. As hygiene was a luxury, typhoid was prevalent. David died of Typhoid during an epidemic in the town in 1898.

Charles Smith (his son in law) took over the mine on his death with his daughter. They worked it for a year, then the gold ran out and they returned to Perth.
