MIGRATION: Emigrated to the USA soon after the birth of his second daughter (by his second marriage) in 1848; he sailed on the MOUNTAINEER from Penzance to New York arriving on 29 May 1848. His father gave him a great deal of money to help him emigrate, which was later the cause of him being removed as a beneficiary from his father's Will.

He moved initially to Pennsylvania where he stayed for almost three years, then onto Mineral Point, Wisconsin, in 1851. On his arrival in the USA he may have initially worked as a Miner.
James founded the Garden City Brewery in Mineral Point in 1854, and was a very successful businessman. In 1854, the Brewery turned out 75 barrels of ARGALL's ALE each day. Initially he also bottled the beer but later abandoned that this branch of the business.

In 1860-61, 1861-62, and again in 1870-71, 1871-72 and 1872-73, he was listed as a member of the Graceland Cemetery Association in Mineral Point. He was also listed as an Alderman in the first two periods. In the Autumn of 1872, he was one of 37 persons suddenly arrested by US Marshal Hamilton and taken to Milwaukee on attachments issues without any notice for pretended contempt of court in not obeying the mandamus writs issued in 1870. They were taken before the Court in Milwaukee on Nov 13, 1872 and, after being granted a hearing, were each fined $100 plus costs. After the fines were paid, they were released.

for the invention of "improvements in steam water-heaters."'97 A communication to him from abroad by James Argall, of Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa, and State of Wisconsin, United States of America
". (London Gazette 19 January 1872).

He was quite a wealthy man when he died in 1896.

Kilmore Free Press (Kilmore, Vic. : 1870 - 1954) (Thursday 20 January 1876:
HEARTLESS VILLANY . * At the City Police Court on Thursday, a young man, apparently about 22 or 23 years of' age, named James Argall, was charged with stealing a watch, a quanity of wearing apparel, and a piece of embroidery, and with deserting his wife. The case revealed a course of conduct on the part of the prisoner which proves him old in crime, if young in years. Some time back Argall, whose parents reside in this country, and are in tolerably good circumstances, came to Melbourne, and that seems to have commenced the infamous career which has terminated in his ruin. He occasionally stayed at house in Flinders-lane, and, while there, a fellow lodger lost a silver watch and some money durinig the night. At the latter end of last year he formed the acquaintance of a young lady living with her aunt. who is also her guardian, at Carleton. He paid marked attentions to her, but her aunt did not like his appearance; and after making enquiries, which did not throw any light upon his anatecedents, she wished to prevent any further communication between them. A letter was, however, subsequently found, which left but little room for doubt that matters were much, further advanced than was anticipated, and the consent of the young lady' s uncle and aunt having been obtained, the marriage was celebrated early in December last. Argall lived with his wife, who is a young and good-looking girl for about ten days, when he deserted her and went to live with a low woman in Fitzroy named Martin, where he was arrested by the detectives. This woman, with whom it appears he had been residing, even while wooing the affections of the girl he so heartlessly seduced, handed to the detectives a number of pawn tickets which the prisoner had given her, amongst them being one for the watch, stolen from his feIlow-lodger some months previously. It also transpired that he had robbed his paramour of portions of her underclothing, and the woman keeping the house at which she lived, of a piece of embroidery, which he had the audacity to present to his wife the day after their marriage. The prisoner, who said nothing, and preserved a stolid look of indifference during the exposure of his villanies, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, cumulative for stealing the embroidery. The woman refused to prosecute for stealing her underclothing and the charge was therefore abandoned, as was also that of deserting his wife. It was intimated that had he informed his parents of the step he was about to take, they would have assisted him, and they will now take means to provide for the unfortunate victim of misplaced confidence in their son.

His Prison record (13516 - 515/23) describes him: Height: 5 ft 4 ins Complexion: sallow Hair: Brown Eyes: Brown Could read and write. Sentenced on 2 counts of Larceny on 13 Jan 1876 to 3 months imprisonment, and on 27 Oct 1876 to 6 months imprisonment. During his imprisonment he served several days in Solitary Confinement for Idleness, and also one day for having bread?

Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842-1899) - Monday 16 December 1889:
A serious explosion of gas occurred this morning at the Port Phillip Club Hotel, Flinders-lane. The night porter, James Argall, was going his rounds when the explosion occurred in one of the sitting rooms. The door of the room was wrenched off its hinges, being split into fragments, and portions of it blown into the bedroom. The windows were smashed, curtains burned, venetian blinds frizzled up, mirror broken, and all the furniture in the room destroyed. Argall, who was badly burned, was removed to the hospital. It is believed that the escape of gas occurred through drawing the chandelier too low down.
