(Posted 06 Oct 2016 by Martin Davis)

William Eli Sanford was a wealthy Canadian businessman and politician in the 19th century. He was descended from a long line of New Englanders, originating with Thomas Sanford of Essex, England, who was an early emigrant to the American colonies in the 1630s .

Sanford was born in 1834 in New York City. Hes was orphaned at a young age, and came to live in Hamilton, Ontario with his aunt and uncle Edward Jackson. His sons Henry and Edward predeceased him. Their daughter Edna married Ernest Tudor, an English officer in the Royal Engineers, and moved to England. Muriel Sanford married Gordon Henderson, an officer in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, and continued to live in Hamilton.

Sanford became involved in clothing manufacturing, and was very successful. His wealth enabled him to build a luxurious mansion called Wesanford in Hamilton. He also owned a summer residence Sans Soucion Lake Rosseau in the Muskoka region of Ontario. He constructed an elegant steam yacht called the S.S. Naiad, which cruised the Muskoka lakes for many years. He moved in the highest political circles in Canada, and was friends with several Canadian Prime Ministers, including Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir John Thompson. He was made a Senator in 1887, and was active in politics until his death.

Sanford died in 1899 aged 60, in a boating accident on Lake Rosseau. Harriet Sanford continued to live in Wesanford until her death in 1938, after which the mansion was demolished.
