Glen Persinger, 93, of Grangeville, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Blackmer Funeral Home of Grangeville.

OBITUARY (published in the Lewiston Tribune 19 December 2010):

Glen Barnard Persinger, Sr., 93
Grangeville, Idaho
Glen Barnard Persinger, Sr., 93, passed away on Dec. 18, 2010, at his home in Grangeville. Glen was born in Waverly, Lancaster County, Neb., on Aug. 18, 1917, to Merl Barnard Persinger and Mary Imogene Clark Persinger. The family moved to Hoquiam, Wash., when Glen was 5 years old.
Just prior to the U.S. involvement in WWII, Glen served in the Army. He was stationed in the Philippines for three years, where he learned the bakery trade. He continued to work as a baker in Washington, Alaska and Oregon until he finally retired at the age of 78.

In 1940 he married Charlene Frances Nicolay and they had a daughter. The couple was divorced.

He then married Geraldine Mae Jergens. They had a son. Glen and Geraldine also divorced.

In 1946 Glen moved from Washington to Fairbanks, Alaska, where, in 1947, he met and married G. Marian Kniffen. They had a daughter and a son. They divorced as well.

In Anchorage, Alaska, in 1965 Glen finally met and married the love of his life, the former Gaye A. Heinonen. The couple moved from Alaska to Oregon in 1974 and later to Washington. They moved to Grangeville in 2005 and eventually moved in with Glen's granddaughter and her husband. Gaye died April 11, 2009, one day after her 94th birthday.

Glen had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He liked gardening, hunting and fishing. He loved boating, and usually had some sort of fast boat that he would use for fishing, camping and water-skiing. He loved fast cars, and for a few years raced in the drag circuit in Alaska. He enjoyed music. He played piano and harmonica and he sang in church choirs. He was a good artist and painted in oils and acrylics.

Glen is survived by his four children, 2 daughters of Grangeville, son and daughter in law of Lewiston, and a son of Kent, Wash., and by his two stepdaughters, one of Anchorage, Alaska, and one of Fairfax, Va. In addition to his children and stepdaughters, Glen is survived by 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by four wives, including his beloved wife, Gaye.

He loved his family and the Lord. We will see him again someday, in Heaven.

Glen's memorial will be held on Jan. 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Idaho Baptist Church, Grangeville. A potluck dinner will follow the services. Services are under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home, Grangeville.

The family is most grateful to all the help from a great-granddaughter and a great-granddaughter-in-law and to his aide. With their loving care he was able to stay at home and enjoy his final days. Thanks also to his physician, who was most helpful and gracious to the family in assisting with Glen's medical needs. Send condolences to the family to: Blackmerfuneralhome.com.

For Grandpa Glen Persinger (1917-2010)
by Jessie Valentine (AKA Jessie Lefler)

How can I say goodbye
When I've hardly had the chance to say hello?
You were my grandfather, yet I barely knew you.
I've seen you on just a few occassions throughout my life.

I count you among my ancestors -
The endless number of them
Whose blood courses through my veins
And whose spirits surround me.
For it is becacuse of each of you that I am here.

Now that you've left your body behind
And what remains of you has gone to your better place
I will be sad for the loss of opportunity to know you better;
Yet I will rejoice because the pains and discomforts of this world
Will not follow your spirit into forever.

The blindness that overtook your eyes in this life has lifted
To reveal all of the love and emotion
That was left unspoken by those around you.
You have closed your eyes in darkness.
And opened them up into the light.

Now you join your family and friends -
The ones who went on before you
Into that great eternal happiness.
Go, and know that you are loved.
