OBITUARY: Iowa County Democrat, January 28, 1926:

Another of the native sons of this community, after several years of gradual weakening, was called from labor to refreshment, in the early hours of Monday night, January 25, 1926 at the Lutheran Hospital in Dodgeville, after traveling life's road more than 69 years.

Mr. Mitchell was born Dec. 4, 1859 in a log house at Barreltown, north of this city, and here in the midst of much hardship and many privations he grew to manhood.

On April 3, 1878, he was married to Miss Martha Clayton, who survives. Nine children were born to this union, one daughter dying in infancy. The remaining children are: Frederick Garfield, Mrs. Henry Vivian, George, Mrs. Harold Brewer, all of Mineral Point; Edith Long of Long Beach, CA, Frank of Dodgeville, and Mrs. Merrill Gilman of Linden. Two sisters and one brother are also among the bereft: Mrs. Jane Lancaster, Long Beach, CA, Mrs. Jerry Rule, Linden, and James Mitchell, Stoughton, Illinois.

For many years Mr. Mitchell farmed with large success, moving with his family to this city twelve years ago where he continued his industry along various lines until weakened by sickness. A hard-working citizen, a home-loving father, and a loyal friend has gone from among us.

With the exception of sixteen months spent in California, Mr. Mitchell lived near and in this city all his life and his going will be missed in many circles.

Funeral services will be held from his late home on Cothren St. on Thursday afternoon, with Rev. A. H. Schoenfeld a W. H. Penn as the officiating ministers. Burial will be made in Graceland.

"Comrade THOMAS WARD MITCHELL, who was born the 10th day of July, 1843, in Mineral Point, county of Iowa, state of Wisconsin:

"Jefferson Barracks played a pivotal role for the Union in the Civil War. Troops from the Barracks raided the pro-secessionist Camp Jackson in St. Louis in 1861 saving the St. Louis Arsenal for the Union. The following year, Jefferson Barracks became a major medical center for troops wounded on the battlefront and the largest and most important Union facility in the country. In 1864, it was the assembly point for St. Louis' defense during Confederate General Sterling Price's raid."

Inscription: "William J. Mitchell died Sept. 28, 1895, aged 77 years. Mary, his wife, died Aug.11, 1896, aged 73 years."

OBITUARY: Mineral Point Tribune, a late Sept. or early Oct. 1895 issue: "Again (it) falls to the Tribune the sad duty of recording the death of one of its staunchest friends and long-time supporters. The subject of this sketch died at his home in this city, Friday, Sept. 27, after being confined to his bed but a few days. During the preceding week he was transacting business on our streets, and visited the Tribune office to renew his subscription." "Deceased was born in County Cornwall, England, in April 1818. In 1839, he was married to Miss Mary Mitchell, and in 1842, came with his young wife and 2 children to Mineral Point. In 1852 he formed one of the many who went to seek fortune in the gold fields of California, leaving his family here. After an absence of 4 years he returned, bringing with him the fruits of the toil and hardships incident to gold mining in those days, to resume work and improvements on the farm north of this city, on which he located soon after arriving in the country. A few years ago, he came to reside in this city, leaving the care and management of his farms to his sons." "With that untiring industry and prudent economy which rarely fail in this country to win success, Mr. Mitchell slowly accumulated a competency, extending his possessions until he became known as one of the largest land owners of the county, and leaving to his heirs, well nigh 1,000 acres of valuable land, beside other property. He was of retiring, unobtrusive habit, but of clear ideas and firmness to maintain them. He was a total abstainer from all intoxicants, and never used tobacco in any form. When but a boy, he gave allegiance to the Christian religion, and throughout his life, adhered to the faith, and died a member of the M. E. Church."

Ten children were born to him, of whom two died in infancy, and 8 survive him, 6 sons and 2 daughters, namely James, John, Thomas, Henry, Edward, Richard, Elizabeth and Mary Jane. All of these were present at the funeral on Tuesday, besides many grandchildren and other relatives." "The aged wife, who had been his efficient helpmate for more than 50 years, was unable to follow him to his final rest, but nonetheless realizes that upon her has fallen a loss not to be recompensed this side of the dark river. Rev. F. W. Straw could not come from the conference at Sparta, although telegraphed for, to conduct the burial services, and Rev. T. Kent acted ably instead, a large concourse being gathered at the M. E. Church on the occasion. The widow and family gratefully
acknowledge the kindly offices and sympathy of many friends in their bereavement."
