Recorded in his son-in-law's biography as "Captain George Oates" of Cornwall. However, an entry recording Companies operating the mines on the East and West banks of the Avoca River from 1700s to 1982 (Copyright c.1993 Alan M Thomas) records: "In 1872, the Williams Brothers of Perran ar Worthal, Cornwall renewed their lease of the Tigoney and Cronebane mines with Capt. George Oates as Manager. Their Head Office was moved to Perranarworthal. In 1884 - Associated Irish Mine Company was dissolved and was taken over by Thomas Revington who renamed the company as the Cronebane Irish Mines under Captain James Higgins of Scorrier, Cornwall. Messrs. Argall and Davies purchased Cronbane Irish Mines to form "The Avoca Syndrate"."

George Oates - he was manager of Nantymwyn in Wales for at least the period 1875-93, and was still living there when he died. Letters from Capt. George Oates to the Williams Bros. Co. at Perran ar Worthal in the 1870s are kept in the National Library in Dublin. They indicate he was from Scorrier near Redruth, Cornwall.
