Hazel Mae Argall Baker married Adolph Ario Baker on Dec 31, 1915 in Butte, MT. (I have a copy of their marriage certificate). I have, as yet, been unable to locate her birth certificate in Butte, but have one request in for 14 Nov 1895 (the date given on her death certificate). I have some information that indicates that she was born in Marysvale, Piute, UT instead of MT. Her mother was born in Utah, so that might work. (From Misty Nikula-Olhsen).

Once married, she lived with her family just outside Butte, Montana.

She had six children:
Harry Adolph Baker: B. 8 Oct 1916 Baker Ranch, Nez Pierce, Jefferson Co.
Elizabeth Margaret Baker: B14 Oct 1919 Butte, MT.
Mary Charlotte Baker: B. 14 Apr 1918 Baker Ranch, Nez Pierce, Jefferson Co.
Adolph Ario Baker jr.: B. 10 May 1923 Butte, MT.
Stella Almeda Baker: B4 Jun 1928 Butte, MT.
William Lyle Baker: B. 8 May 1930 Butte, MT.

GENERAL NOTES: Known as "Honey". Honey was ahead of her time. She attended Mills College, an elite private woman's college in Oakland, California, for two years, then transferred (for financial reasons) to the University of California at Berkeley, from where she received her BA. I know she wasn't the only woman to attend college in the early 1920s, but it was very unusual, especially for a woman of modest means -- I've yet to meet someone my age whose grandmother graduated from college. Her parent's greatly valued the arts and education.

BIRTH: Birth is listed in the IGI as Helen Whiteside Argall.

From The Cornishman - Fri. 24 July 1902:

She is listed in the California Voter Registrations, 1900-1968, Sacramento County, 1926, as Miss Helen Argall, a Teacher, living with her parents at Box 348, Precinct 127, Assembly District 14.

Seems a very shadowy figure, and his death is not recorded in the GRO indexes.

MIGRATION: He travelled to Cuba between 1841 and 1851 according to the Census evidence. There is a reference to one of his father's sons going there in a letter written about 1857. (There was a Zaragora Mine, on the Island of Cuba at the time, in which a lot of Cornish worked. EL COBRE, COPPER MINES, SANTIAGO DE CUBA, ORIENTE CUBA is another). It is thought he was at El Cobre. The Cornish miners were sent by sea from Cornwall to Swansea in Wales, from where they took ship to Cuba.

DEATH: He is presumed to have died in Cuba around 1866. Henry is described in the 1871 Census for Redruth, as already dead (his wife is described as a widow).

The Cornish Miners in Cuba were recruited from around Camborne, Illogan and Redruth on very attractive pay and conditions. However, those sent there found a hot and humid climate where yellow fever, typhoid fever, smallpox, malaria and other diseases were common. The Cornish workers lived in one-storey adobe wattle houses on the edge of the town near the mines. Insects could enter the houses freely, bringing tropical diseases to which the Cornish had no immunity, particularly yellow fever. A Protestant burial ground was opened about this time since the Cornish, considered heretics, could not be buried in the Catholic cemetery. More than 300 British Miners died and were buried in the El Cobre Cemetery; it is thought Henry is buried there, although as yet, no proof.

The Late Bert Argall.

Mr. C. Clift, who was a comrade of the late soldier, Bert Argall, last week received the following letter from his old and esteemed mate:'97

In the Trenches, Somewhere in France, Thursday, 11th May, 1916.
As you can see I am still alive and kicking, and things are pretty good with me; only, they are not too good when Fritz over yonder starts lobbing shells about here, and he is not very particular where he puts them. I have managed to dodge all the shells so far, but have had a few lucky es-
capes, which I hope to be able to relate to all of you when the war is over. When we first arrived in France it was raining and cold for the first couple of weeks, but now the rain has stopped, and it is getting warmer, so things ought to be livening up, although it is somewhat lively round about here fairly often. I heard that there has been a great season up around Orange, so I expect matters
in the office are pretty busy. One thing about this game, Charlie, there are no ''bungs" to answer; but very often, if a chap has stiff luck and gets caught pinching into town (for we go into a town for a spell every now and again) he has to toe the carpet before the colonel. I don't know what would be the best, toeing it before him or E.M. What's the new boss like there? I expect E.M. will be
Chief Commissioner very soon, and I think he will make a good one. I have run into a few Orange chaps back in Egypt, but have not seen very many here. Met Oliver Thwaite here, and he looked well on it. I believe Charlie Finch and Len Cockett have donned the khaki; in fact, I suppose a good few have come away since I left. Those chaps made it willing rioting like they did. They ought to
be put out on the desert, where we were before we came here. Digging trenches in the sand would have taken it all out of them.
Well, Charlie, I think I will have to buzz off, so I will close. I have a pretty good time, in the scouts, and there are only a few of us, and we have got a good officer. I can tell you we get plenty of excitement in our game, but I will not be able to write about my experiences here. I hope to be able to tell you about them later.
Remember me to George Allen and all the other chaps. Is Wally Clarke S.M. yet?

DEATH: Killed in action in World War I.
2330 Pte Argall, Herbert H.
19th Battalion 11.7.15 K.I.A. 23.6.16
Argall, H.H.
Town: Orange, N.S.W.
Regtl. No: 2330.

Cemetery Register No.: FRANCE 83. Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois Grenie:

Argall, Herbert Henry Argall, Pte. Herbert H., 2330. 19th Bn.Australian Inf. Killed in action 23 June, 1916. Age 20. Son of Thomas and Annie Argall, of 28, Anglo Square, Kogarah, Sydney, New South Wales. Native of Woollahra, Sydney. IV. D. 29.

Herbert seems to have been the only death in a raiding party of volunteers, a raid in which an 18 year old farmer from NSW won the VC for carrying wounded comrades back from the enemy trenches, and going back to look for two more after serious wounding on his third trip across No Man's Land. So in addition to the Battalion Diaries, there may be something of relevance in the VC citation. The similarly respectful letter from Annie to the 'Officer in Charge', on 25 July 1916, was just as moving to read:

Dear Sir, Can you give us any information concerning the death of No 2330 Private Herbert Henry Argall, D Company, 19th Battalion, 5th Brigade AIF who was killed in action on the 23rd of June 1916 you will greatly oblige his loving Mother. Yours Sincerely A.Argall

The information available was, of course, negligible, and seems to remain negligible. He is buried in Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Nord, France. Grave No. IV D.29.

OBITUARY: Leader (Orange, NSW : 1912 - 1922) - Wed 23 Aug 1916:

THE LATE PTE. ARGALL. From the Rev. S. Fernie, chaplain of the 5th Infantry Brigade, Mr. and
Mrs. Argall, of Orange East, parents of the late Pte. Bert Argall, have received the following sympathetic letter:'97Somewhere in France, June 26th.
"Long before you get this you will have had the sad official news of the death of your son, Private H. H. Argall, of the 19th Battalion, A.I.F., but I thought you would like to have what details I can give you. He was killed while on duty on Friday night, 23rd June, and death was practically instantaneous. I buried him in a little cemetery close to here on Saturday, and I could tell you after the war where he is buried, if you wished. Your son was a good soldier, and was well spoken of by his officers and comrades, and though I know well how great your loss is, yet you may
well be proud of him- With deep sympathy
."

Leader (Orange, NSW : 1912 - 1922) Fri 29 Dec 1916 Page 6:

THE LATE BERT ARGALL.
Sergt. Stan Craske, of D Coy., 19th Battalion, writes to Mr. Argall as follows:

Dear Mr. Argall, I am at last permitted to let you know of the circumstances of your son's death. 'Snow,' as he was always known to us, joined my platoon in Egypt, and was with me all the time. On arrival at the trenches I was chosen as Sergeant of the Scouts, and when volunteers were called for he came with me. He was my partner all the time, because he was a boy I could trust to help me in times of difficulty, and he never showed the slightest fear. On the night of June 23rd the two of us were showing two men from another battalion over some of No-Man's Land when the enemy opened up a machine gun, and 'Snow,' who was at my elbow, was hit with fourteen bullets. Death was almost instantaneous, and the only words he said were, 'I'm hit.' We carried him in, and he was buried in the British cemetery near Bois Grenier. Both you and Mrs. Argall have my deepest sympathy in the loss of such a son, because he was one in a thousand and a boy you can be proud of. He was a favorite with us all, because of the clean life he lived. I was myself wounded outside Pozieres, having one hand torn open, a piece of shell through my leg, and another piece through one foot, and a small piece in the instep. These are all nearly better now."

Leader (Orange, NSW : 1912 - 1922) Fri 15 Sep 1916 Page 4:

THE LATE PTE. BERT ARGALL.
Mr. T. Argall yesterday received the following letter from Lieut. A. R. Blackett, France, referring to the lamented death of his son, Bert:'97
''By the time you receive this you will probably have been notified that your son, Pte. H. H. Argall, was killed in action on the 23/6/16. I thought that perhaps you might like to know something more than the mere official report would tell. I am now in charge of the platoon to which your son belonged, and on the night of the 23rd he was a member of a party scouting in No. Man's Land. An enemy machine gun fired a burst, and your son was unhappily a victim. However, I am sure you will be pleased to hear that he suffered no pain in his death, and was brought back to our trenches
by the excellent work of Sgt. Craske, who was with the party, and who, I believe, is also writing to you. Your son was buried in Brewery Orchard Cemetery, 2¼ miles south of Armentieres, by the Rev. E. H. Fernie, attached to the 5th Infantry Brigade A.I.F. Your son was a soldier whom
any officer would be pleased to have in his platoon, and one whom we could ill afford to lose."
