In the 1861 UK Census, he is listed as Arthur B Nicholls, a Widower aged 43 born in Ireland. He is a AB Trinity College, Dublin and curate of Haworth. He is living in the Parsonage, Haworth, with his father-in-law Patrick Bronte, and two servants. (RG 9/3228, Folio 47, Page 2).
In the 1901 Irish Census, he is listed as Arthur Bell Nicholls, a Clergyman aged 83, and born in Co. Antrim, Ireland. He is living with his (second) wife, his mother-in-law (Harriette), and 3 domestic servants, at 101 in Main Street (Banagher, King's Co.).

GENERAL NOTES: BIRTH: Born Killead, County Antrim on 6th January 1819.

Background: Arthur Bell Nicholls came from a similar background to Mr. Brontė's. Both were from families of ten children of small farmers in Northern Ireland, and both were assisted by local clergymen to go on to university. In 1826 Arthur was taken in by his uncle, the Reverend Allan Bell, headmaster of the Royal Free School, Banagher. Ten years later, he went up to Trinity College, Dublin, graduating in 1844. He was ordained as a deacon in 1845 in Lichfield, and his first clerical position was the Curacy at Haworth, and he became Patrick Brontė's curate there. He began to develop closer relations with Patrick's daughter,Charlotte, who by that time had written Jane Eyre, and they conducted a friendly exchange of letters. In December 1848, he conducted the funeral service of Charlotte's sister, Emily Brontė.
On 13 December 1852, Nicholls asked Charlotte for her hand in marriage. Charlotte's father vehemently refused to approve the union on the grounds that a poor Irish pastor should never be bold enough to suggest marrying his famous daughter. In 1853 Nicholls announced his intention to leave for Australia as a missionary, but he later changed his mind despite collecting references (including one from Patrick Brontė) and a farewell gift from the parishoners. He was re-deployed for several months to another parish, but he had several secret meetings with Charlotte in Haworth. Little by little, Charlotte became persuaded by Nicholls, and in February 1854 her father finally gave his permission for the visits.

MARRIAGES: First marriage: His first marriage is recorded in the GRO indexes for the June quarter of 1854 in the Keighley Registration District under reference 9a 201. The couple are listed as Arthur Bell Nicholls and Charlotte Bronte. Charlotte passed away in 1855 while pregnant with their only child. He then returned to Ireland where he married his cousin Mary Bell in 1864.

After his wife's death in 1855, Arthur remained in Haworth umtil Patrick Bronte's death in 1861. He had hoped to take over the living on his father-in-law's death, but he was overlooked. He then returned to his roots in Ireland, near Banagher, and took up farming in a small way; he never worked as a priest again.

Second marriage: In 1864 he married again to his cousin Mary Anna Bell, the daughter of his uncle, the Reverend Allan Bell. They had no children. The second marriage took place in Ireland.
