After she had been deserted by her husband around 1907, and after the death of her son Philip Edwin, she took her two remaining children by Philip Argall: Stanley (#576) and Norah (#573), to Truro and abandoned them in a doorway opposite the Cathedral where the (horse-drawn) buses stopped. This happened after 1907 but before 1911 as she is not in that year's census. John Charles Grey (#568), their uncle (who was a bus driver) and married to a sister off Philip Argall, found them and took them home to Fiddler's Green, where he and his wife initially brought them up.

MIGRATION: Susan is believed to have emigrated from England to the United States around 1910, where her father (Richard) was known to be living, possibly to meet, or in the company of, Barrington Ball. Correspondence held by Esme Prout Mitchell (now deceased) showed her address to be in Florida.

Second marriage: There is no evidence (yet) of any marriage. Her second partner was Barrington Britton Ball, who also came from St Newlyn East area in Cornwall. It is not clear if she simply changed her name, or remarried, to become BALL.

GENERAL NOTES:
BAPTISM: Baptised at Bethesda Chapel, Truro.

Samuel, and his elder brother Daniel, both suffered heavy losses in the collapse of Cornish mining and had to assume very different lifestyles from those which they had followed before. Samuel, having for a short time run his father-in-law's business, dealing in wines and spirits decided to look for a more secure occupation and trained in Exeter for three years to become a "Surgeon Dentist". He had become a widower in 1835, and after problems caused by his brother-in-law, the notorious, John Nichols Tom, he decided to leave Cornwall with his three surviving sons and one daughter and came to live in the Channel Island of Guernsey in August 1841.

Once in Guernsey he set up in practise and trained all his sons in this profession. The two eldest sons eventually moved down to Jersey where they set up their own practise. Their younger brother Samuel George Hugo remained in Guernsey and continued the practise once his father had died. He, in turn, trained his eldest son George William Hugo as a dentist and he was the last of that line to follow that profession.

His son, Thomas Henry Hugo, was the youngest of ten children born to George William Hugo and his French wife Marie Madeleine née Guerin. He worked in banking and married Patricia Honora O'Callaghan and they had eight children, two of whom died in infancy.
