OBITUARY - Victoria Conkey (Mining Journal (6/11/2004)):

NEGAUNEE - Victoria J. (Ombrello) Conkey, age 87, of 414 N. McKenzie Avenue, Negaunee, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at her home under the loving care of her family and U.P. Home Health & Hospice.

Victoria was born February 7, 1917 in Calumet to the late Raymond J. & Alma (Christensen) Heighes, Sr. Victoria grew up in Palmer and Ishpeming and attended schools in those areas. Victoria worked in a Defense Plant in Battle Creek, MI during World War II, before settling in Chicago where she worked for many years as a secretary for Oliver Tractor Co. and in the insurance industry. She was also a co-owner of a travel agency in Chicago with her second husband. She and her husband moved to Neilsville, WI where she was employed by the State of Wisconsin in the Social Services Department. Upon the death of her husband, she operated the travel agency until her retirement in 1978. She then moved to Florida, living there until she returned to the U.P. in 1992. Victoria was an avid Packer and Cubs fan and a lover of animals, especially Bailey. Three children survive Victoria, James J. (Karen) Ombrello of The Villages, FL, Mary Ann (William Beckman) Argall of Marquette and Victoria M. Ombrello of Brooklyn, NY; 1 brother, Raymond J. Heighes, Jr. of Springfield, VA; 5 grandchildren, Diane (Pat Clancey) Korpi of Green Bay, WI, James J. Ombrello, Jr. of Green Bay, WI, Joseph G. (Susan) Argall, Jr. of Gladstone, David J. (Mary) Argall of Coleman, WI and Terri L. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with Pastor Hank Steede officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

The family will greet friends at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00pm until the time of services.
