OBITUARY: The Anaconda Standard (Anaconda, Montana), August 8th, 1910:

James Gray, one of the best old-time mining men of Butte, who came here over 30 years ago, died Saturday night at his home near Elkhorn, Mont. after a short illness. His body was brought to Butte last nightand is at Richards Undertaking Rooms.
Mr Gray was 61 years of age, and came to Butte in 1878. He was a widower and leaves three sons. He was a brother of the late John Gray, who was at one time chief of police of Butte, and who died a year ago at Phoenix, Ariz.
The plans for Mr Gray's funeral have not yet been made, but will be announced later. He was a member of the Knights of Pythlas Lodge at Marysville, Mont.

Five children: James Frank Gray (b. 1894), Marie Christine Gray (b. & d. 1896), William Arthur Gray (b. 1900, d. 1951 - my grandfather), Earl Rygaard Gray (b. 1908, d. 1978), and Doris Ingeborg Gray (b. 1912, d. 2003 (?)).

John worked in the iron mines at a very young age. He lost his arm in an accident at age 16, and for the rest of his life worked at what can best be called "odd jobs".

Death is recorded in Ishpeming Cemetery Book (Entry 7411) under the name John Gray, aged 63, born in England on 18 February 1872 and died 18 December 1935. He was buried on 21 December 1935 in Lot 18, Block 60, Grave 2. He died of a Carcinoma of the penis. His parents were James May and Mary Carter.
