Leader (Orange, NSW : 1912 - 1922) - Mon 26 Aug 1918, Page 5:

Farewell to Mr and MRS T. ARGALL.
"A farewell social was tendered Mr. and Mrs. Tom Argall in the Methodist School Hall on Thursday night, when an illuminated address and a cheque were handed them. A large and enthusiastic gathering greeted the guests of the evening. The Rev. C. P. Walkden Brown presided, and on the
dais were also Mr. Argall, Mr. Frank P. Carr (senior circuit steward), and Mr. Stuart Lamrock (secretary of the Sunday School).
A musical programme was contributed to by Miss Smith (violinist), Mr. Leith McFarlane, Miss McFarlane, Mrs. Clinton, Miss Clare Henkes, Mr. Black, the Misses Stanford, Mrs. Maddrell, and Miss Daisy James. The chairman stated that Mr. and Mrs. Argall signify two persons who were examples in many ways of earnest work, glad and joyous service in the interests of the Methodist Church of Orange, and he felt their departure a distinct loss to the cause here; and that it will take a long time to get accustomed to their absence; for they will be missed at every turn. Personally he had been helped by their example of what they professed to be, humble, active, cheerful Christians, and yet showing fortitude amidst tempestuous sorrows. On behalf of the circuit and all the church interests he felt thankful to God that ever they came here. Mr. Frank P. Carr, senior circuit steward and Sunday School superintendent, On behalf of the officers of the circuit, and teachers and scholars of the Sunday School, acknowledged Mr. Argall's ardent work, particularly in the Sunday School, where he shone. During his regime as Superintendent, the Sunday School attained its highest success in the number of passes in the State Sunday School examinations. These kind of men could ill be spared. He wished Mr. and Mrs. Argall God-speed and God's
richest blessings where they would reside.
Mrs. McFarlane expressed appreciation, on behalf of the Ladies' Church Aid Association, of Mrs. Argall's saintly character as a cliurchwoman and her excellence as a citizen. Mr. Stuart Lamrock, secretary of the church properties, referred to Mr Argall's willing and strenuous activities at decorating for church anniversaries, and at the Hospital Show tea tent and at the Sunday School
picnics and similar functions. Mr. D. Boon, as a fellow steward, eulogised Mr. Argall as a "White
man." Mr. Colter, Mr. T. H. Oates and Mr, English sent apologies.
Master Milton Allen, speaking for the lads in the Bible Class, presented a fountain pen to Mr. Argall as a special memento of his good work as their instructor. The Rev. Walkden Brown then
made the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Argall of a cheque and the illuminated address'97the cheque to the lady lest in the exuberance of his natural generosity the husband would part with it to the first philanthropic appeal coming his way. The address was as follows:'97
"On the eve of your departure from Orange we desire to express our appreciation of the devoted services rendered to the Methodist Church by you and your good wife during the past 13 years. In the various offices you have held, and especially in the Sunday School, you have been an
example of Christian zeal and ungrudging work. We have glorified God for the fortitude with which you have born the loss of your two brave lads, who laid down their lives in the great war for God and liberty. We regret your removal, but the good you have been instrumental in doing will remain; and we trust that you will be richly blessed in the new sphere of labor on which you are entering. The
accompanying cheque we ask you to accept as a small token of the affection and esteem in which you and Mrs. Argall are held by your many church friends in Orange."'97Signed
on behalf of the Methodist Church and Sunday School, Rev. C. P. Walkden Brown, Minister; F. P. Carr, Superintendent; S. Lamrock S.S.Secretary. In accepting the gifts Mr. Argall said, "If ever any man was sorry to leave Orange it is Tom Argall." It was sad leaving a loving people. He and his partner were deeply touched when 200 citizens of Orange wrote letters of sympathy on the occasion of the loss of their first son, killed at the war. These years in Orange had been the best and happiest of his life even though the cup of sorrow had been so full.
After musical honors, refreshments were served, and the meeting closed with the National. Anthem and the Benediction.

The Relatives and friends of HERBERT and PRESTON ESLICK are kindly invited to attend the funera! of their dearly loved BROTHER Thomas Argall, to leave 28 Anglo square, Kogarah, THIS (Saturday) AFTERNOON, at 2 o'clock, for Methodist Cemetery, Woronora, via Carlton Station. WOOD, COFFILL and COMPANY LTD.

OBITUARY: THOMAS ARGALL.

The many friends of Mr. Thomas Argall, of Angel Parade, Kogarah, will deeply regret to hear of his death, which took place in Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday night, after a lengthy illness.

For 25 years he had suffered more or less from a leg trouble, which gradually grew worse, and for the past six months he had been under medical care. Mr. Argall had been under the X ray treatment, and on Monday last proceeded to the hospital to receive closer observation. Whilst walking from the train to the cab he suffered an awful experience, his leg collapsing and breaking under him. With the aid of an ambulance he was taken to the hospital, where it was discovered that he was suffering from a cancer in the leg. He was prepared for an operation, and on Thursday the leg was amputated at the junction with the hip. The strain on a weakened constitution
was, however, too great, and he passed away on Thursday night. These facts were conveyed in a letter to Mr. S. Lamrock, a very old riend of the family, on Thursday. The late Mr. Argall was a fine type of man, and for many years had been a letter-sorter on the postal vans attached to mail trains. He was of a kindly disposition and extremely courteous, and his death will be deeply lamented by a host of friends in Orange. For many years he resided here, and on his removal to Sydney both Mr. and Mrs. Argall were given a flattering farewell presentation by the Methodists, of which body deceased was an earnest worker. For some time he was superintentent of the Sunday School, and all matters connected with the church received his earnest attention.

During the progress, of the war he received a severe blow, losing his only two sons - two fine boys - who made the supreme sacrifice within 12 months of each other. His friends noticed a change in him, and from then on his usual robustness seemed to fade away. He leaves a sorrowing wife and two daughters to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
