CENSUS INFORMATION: In the 1900 US Census, he is listed as E Ellery, a Placer Miner aged 44 and born in Wisconsin in March 1856. He is living in Trinity Center Township, Trinity, California, with his wife, 2 daughters, a son and a neice. He has been married for 21 years, (Supervisors District 3, Enumertation District 192, Sheet 3).
In the 1910 US Census he is listed as Elias Ellery, a Hoetel Keeper aged 53, born in Wisconsin. He is living in Trinity Center Precinct, Shasta County, California, with his wife, a son and a daughter. (Supervisors District 1, Enumeration Distyrict 139, Sheet 2A).

GENERAL NOTES:
When the two boys (James and Elias) arrived in Weaverville, CA, their father was not present to greet them. However, they received a hearty welcome from his friend Fred Zarli, who throughout his life remained staunch friend of the Ellery family. Zarli already owned considerable property in the county. Included in this was a piece on Stuarts Fork of the Trinity River and the boys spent many happy hours there and were in fact, among the first to enjoy the beauty and good fishing of the Trinity Alps area. Soon after their arrival, the boys began attending school in Weaverville. In their classroom sat boys and girls who became life-long friends. Among these were Maggie Colbert, Robert Cochran, Kitty O'Neill, James Bartlett, Christina Laws, Gerald O'Shay and others too numerous to mention. Elias Ellery was barely out of his teens when he began to carry mail. His first job was on the route between Lewiston and Cinnabar, then a thriving mining town, but one which as practically disappeared from present day maps. Getting the mail through during the winter required courage and skill, snow drifts on the mountains often reaching the depth of twenty feet. At this time Elias drove stage crossing the Siskiyou Mountains. As a result, his name appears on the memorial plaque in the town of Shasta, which was contributed by Mrs.Helene Bacon Boggs and honors the pioneers who carried the mail on the California-Oregon Stage Line. It was about this time that Elias Ellery met his future wife, Ada Sevedge, the daughter of pioneers of Shasta County, Nancy and Kenton Sevedge, who lived in French Gulch. Three years later James Ellery married his sister-in-law's attractive sister, Mary Alice Sevedge.

OBITUARY: Trinity Journal June 9, 1917: A GOOD CITIZEN HAS PASSED AWAY Elias Ellery of Trinity Center, one of the best known and most respected citizens of Northern Trinity, died Monday afternoon in Oakland. He had been ill for some months and with his family spent the winter in Oakland hoping that a change of climate would be of benefit but disease acquired too strong a hold and nothing that medical skill could accomplish or devoted care do availed. The remains were brought to Trinity Center on Tuesday. The deceased was born in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, March 29, 1856. When a lad of about 13 years he and his brother James came to Weaverville where his father, James Ellery, was then living, his mother being dead. After a year or two at school in Weaverville he joined his father at Trinity Center, where the latter was engaged in ranching with the late Fred Zarli. He spent the greater part of his life in that section of our county where he followed, at various times, mining, ranching, teaming, contracting and hotel keeping, at all of which he was unusually successful. In 1879 he was married a French Gulch to Miss Ada Savage, who survives him. As the result of this union there are now living three daughters, Mrs. J.R. Franck of Trinity Center, Mrs. Minnie Aldrich of Oakland and Miss Gladyse Ellery of Trinity Center and one son, Elias K. Ellery of the same place. He also leaves a brother, James Ellery of Trinity Center. His father died at Trinity Center in 1879 (actually it was 1876) since which time he faced the struggle of life with rugged health and keen intelligence. He was of strong, energetic nature and devoted his entire attention and strength to whatever he undertook. Mr. Ellery was a man of high character; generous to a fault, his heart and hand were ever open to the call of distress. By nature he was a leader and from his younger days took a prominent part in the social business and political affairs of his community and county. Just in all his relations to his fellow man he was easily one of the most prominent men in the county and was widely known and respected not only here but in the northern part of the State as well. he had always taken a man's part in the work of the world and taken it well. In the book of his life there is no page that those who cared for him would desire to see erased. His home life was unusually pleasant. He possessed the greatest gift given man -- a loving wife, devoted children. Life had been good to him. The bride of his youth was the sweetheart of his old age. When on his bed of pain and the shadows were lengthening toward the west, it must have been a comfort and consolation to him to have his family around him, to sense their presence, to feel their love and care. A true and loving husband, a kind and indulgent father, his memory will ever be cherished in the home circle now broken. We extend to his bereaved widow and children our sincere sympathy in their hour of sorrow. They may be comforted by the thought that he has lived his life well, that his memory will ever be to them an inspiration and that he has passed away leaving in the hearts of his friends the love and esteem to which his honorable life entitled him. His life like that of most of us was plain and unpretentious. He attended strictly to his own affairs and always did his part. Of manly instincts and or companionable nature he numbered his friends by hundreds and the news of his death will sadden many hearts and will be received by all that knew him with a sense of personal loss. One of our best citizens has left us, may the coming years bring him only peace and rest. His funeral too place Thursday afternoon and the attendance was the largest ever known in that community. Many came from outside towns and from Shasta county, to show their respect for the family, their love and esteem for the dead. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, one piece sent by the Redding Lodge of Elks, of which the deceased was a member, being especially noticeable. The services were held in the parlor of the hotel, and were conducted by Rev. Harold E. Anderson of Weaverville, during which H.R. Given, an old friend of the deceased, paid a touching tribute to his memory.
(The cause of death was pernicious anemia. Our cousin Evalee Carter Green gave me a copy of this obituary).

MARRIAGE:

The advent of the Ellery Family in Trinity County, CA began in the middle "60's" of the 1800's with the arrival in Weaverville of James Ellery, a young man in his thirties, who had come from his home in Mineral Point, a small mining town in Wisconsin. Like so many men, who came during that period of migration, he did not expect to remain after he made a stake. Like so many also, he didn't make any quick money.
James Ellery had left behind a wife and four young children. Within a short time, the slow post brought the sad news that scarlet fever had invaded the little house in faraway Wisconsin and death had come to the young mother and the two smaller children. The father decided to remain in Trinity County and began to make plans for bringing his two remaining sons to California. Mr. Ellery learned that Mr. and Mrs. Ben Rule were following other members of their family from the East to Weaverville. By the exchange of letters he arranged to have the boys, Elias, then fourteen, and James, two years younger, accompany the Rules. In February of 1870 the little party arrived in Sacramento. From there they took the riverboat to Red Bluff, and then a stagecoach to Weaverville. The pleasant associations in Weaverville ceased when the Ellerys went to live in Trinity Center, where Fred Zarli and James Ellery engaged in ranching. The school term in this district was short, so for one term at least, the boys attended school in Shasta, which was then the county seat of Shasta County. However, they were living in Trinity Center when their father was accidentally killed in an accident, which occurred near French Gulch in August 1876. As always, Fred Zarli, proved to be a true friend.

DEATH: He was accidentally killed in an accident, which occurred near French Gulch in August 1876.

James Ellery:

News item, 1876 (I am not sure if this appeared in the Trinity Journal or the Redding newspaper)

Killed -- last Wednesday. James Ellery well know in Shasta and Trinity counties, fell from his wagon near the Mountain House, was kicked in the head by one of the wheel horses, and two of the wagon wheels passed over his neck. When found, the body was still warm. The team and wagon were found down the mountain side some distance, having run up the grade. Deceased was a native of Engand, aged 45 years.

BURIAL: He is buried at the Coffee Creek Cemetery, Trinity Center, CA.

Notes
General:
GENERAL NOTES: His father, James, sent for the two surviving sons, Elias and Levi James. They travelled with Ben Rule and his family by train to Sacramento and then by boat and stagecoach to Trinity County, California, where they joined their father.
When the two boys arrived in Weaverville, CA, their father was not present to greet them.
It was about this time that Elias Ellery met his future wife, Ada Sevedge, the daughter of pioneers of Shasta County: Nancy and Kenton Sevedge, who lived in French Gulch.
Three years later James Ellery married his sister-in-law's attractive sister, Mary Alice Sevedge.
